ABS-CBN to Release "Darna" as TV Series in 2021

The much-awaited ABS-CBN project "Darna" is set to fly as a TV series in 2021 as announced by the Kapamilya network during the special contract signing event titled "Star Magic Shines On" wherein several of today's sought-after talents inked their respective contracts with ABS-CBN.

Tuloy na tuloy na po ang paglipad ni Darna. Ngayong 2021 na po ang Mars Ravelo’s ‘Darna: The TV Series,” said Cory Vidanes, ABS-CBN chief operating officer of broadcast.

She also announced that Jane de Leon will portray the iconic Filipino superheroine in the TV series during the event, wherein Jane renewed her contract with Star Magic.

I’m overwhelmed by the happiness I feel. I am so excited for the next chapters of my life,” Jane said. “It’s another dream come true. I have so much gratitude for our bosses because until now, they still entrust me with Darna’s stone,” she added.

Apart from Jane, the artists who renewed their ties with ABS-CBN today include the Millennial Multimedia Idol Kim Chiu, leading men Enchong Dee, JM De Guzman, and Joseph Marco, MYX VJ and host Robi Domingo, and teen actresses Andrea Brillantes and Kira Balinger. They are joined by Star Hunt’s newest P-Pop groups, “BINI” and “SHA Boys.”

Kim, who led Star Cinema's horror offering “U-Turn,” will star in a new series titled “Bawal Lumabas” under Dreamscape Entertainment set to be released on December 14. She is currently hosting “It’s Showtime” and can be watched regularly on “ASAP Natin ‘To.”

“Pinoy Big Brother Connect” host, Netflix film “Alter Me” top-biller, and “Enrich” other half Enchong will star in an upcoming inspirational series titled “Huwag Kang Mangamba” with Gold Squad member Andrea. Joining them are the other Gold Squad artists namely Francine Diaz, Kyle Echarri, and Seth Fedelin.

JM, who last starred in “Pamilya Ko,” is geared to be back on television with a new series titled “Init sa Magdamag” with Gerald Anderson and Yam Concepcion. The teleserye will fire up the television this 2021. Fans can also watch him in an upcoming Star Cinema movie.

Meanwhile, Joseph, who recently joined the “Ang Sa Iyo Ay Akin” cast, will be part of two Metro Manila Film Festival (MMFF) entries this year.

Kira, who plays Hope in “Ang Sa Iyo Ay Akin,” also signed up with Star Magic. Fans of Kira and Grae Fernandez can expect to watch the “KiRae” loveteam in a teleserye and online project to be announced soon.

On the other hand, Star Hunt’s new girl group “BINI” and rising talented boy group “SHA Boys” also signed up to be part of Star Magic. Comprising “BINI” are Aiah, Colet, Maloi, Gwen, Stacey, Mikha, Jhoanna, and Sheena; while the “SHA Boys” include Gelo, Mikki, Akira, Nate and JL.

“BINI” recently wowed the madlang pipol with its “Da Coconut Nut” video number on the “It’s Showtime” Facebook page that has garnered almost 3 million views. The official music video of their single is now available on the BINI TV YouTube channel.

On the other hand, the “SHA Boys” recently made waves online as they performed their energetic and electrifying version of some of Sarah Geronimo’s hit songs including “Tala” and “Kilometro” on the “ASAP Natin ‘To” stage.

Meanwhile, ABS-CBN chairman Mark Lopez thanked the artists for their trust and expressed optimism for the coming year.

As a new year is about to begin, we remain hopeful and positive with our artists, our ABS-CBN leaders, our employees, and most especially our loyal followers. We know we will be able to soar to new heights as we continue to serve the Filipinos worldwide,” he said.

ABS-CBN president and chief executive officer Carlo Katigbak, on the other hand, emphasized that being a Kapamilya is not just a job but a calling to serve. He thanked the Star Magic artists for standing by the network despite the challenges it is currently facing.

Today, I want to thank the stars who represent ABS-CBN to the world outside. Kayo ang nagbibigay ng liwanag at ligaya sa ating mga Kapamilya. Thank you for choosing to be part of our mission, thank you for believing in our company, and thank you for supporting us in our most difficult moments,” Katigbak said.

Katigbak ended his speech by introducing Laurenti Dyogi as the new head of Star Magic who also expressed his gratitude to the Kapamilya artists who stayed and signed up with the talent agency.

Star Magic is known to produce, to hone, and to manage the brightest and most talented stars in Philippine show business, and today we continue this legacy and tradition,” said Dyogi, who assumes his new role in Star Magic starting January 2021 concurrent to his current position as head of TV Production.

As we welcome new artists to the Star Magic family, we also want to express our deepest gratitude to the Star Magic artists who chose to stay with us as we continue to rebuild and explore new opportunities,” he added.

The “Star Magic Shines On” event was hosted by Gretchen Fullido and was live-streamed simultaneously on KTX.ph, ABS-CBN and Star Magic’s Facebook page and YouTube channel, abs-cbn.com website, and on iWant TFC.

Wonder Woman 1984, Matrix 4, Dune and Other Warner Bros. Films to Stream on HBO Max Starting December 25

Warner Bros. has just announced that it will be releasing its 2021 line-up of films on HBO Max to run simultaneously with the theater release dates in the US.

Thus, viewers can opt to catch the movies in cinemas or on their TV sets - or both.

Wonder Woman 1984 starring Gal Gadot will serve as the opening salvo of this arrangement on December 25, 2020. The movie, just like the rest of the 2021 line-up, will be available on HBO Max for only 31 days. After that, the films will continue to play in theaters until it arrives as home entertainment.

The other movies slated for release by the giant media company next year include The Little Things, Judas and the Black Messiah, Tom & Jerry, Godzilla vs. Kong, Mortal Kombat, The Conjuring: The Devil Made Me Do It, Space Jam: A New Legacy, The Suicide Squad, Dune, and Matrix 4.

The decision was influenced by the lingering uncertainty surrounding cinema operations until next year.

We’re living in unprecedented times which call for creative solutions, including this new initiative for the Warner Bros. Pictures Group,” WarnerMedia chair and CEO Ann Sarnoff Sarnoff said in a statement. “No one wants films back on the big screen more than we do. We know new content is the lifeblood of theatrical exhibition, but we have to balance this with the reality that most theaters in the U.S. will likely operate at reduced capacity throughout 2021.”

With this unique one-year plan, we can support our partners in exhibition with a steady pipeline of world-class films, while also giving moviegoers who may not have access to theaters or aren’t quite ready to go back to the movies the chance to see our amazing 2021 films,” she added. “We see it as a win-win for film lovers and exhibitors, and we’re extremely grateful to our filmmaking partners for working with us on this innovative response to these circumstances.

So far, this unique set-up is only earmarked to be rolled out in the States.

There's no indication at least as of the moment if the HBO experiment will be extended to other locations such as Europe or Asia.

DDB Group Philippines Wins at Campaign Asia-Pacific Agency of the Year Awards

DDB Group Philippines received three citations in the recently concluded Campaign Asia-Pacific Agency of the Year awards. The leading integrated marketing group’s winning entries this year straddled three different categories – Philippines PR Agency of the Year, Philippines Media Agency of the Year, and Southeast Asia Best Culture.

DDB’s integrated PR solutions firm, Ripple8, Inc., won Silver as Philippines PR Agency of the Year. Winning in its first year of joining the coveted regional awards made it extra special for Ripple8.

It is a deep honor to be recognized by Campaign, especially during this pandemic. We never expected to join award competitions this year. People are our priority. But thankfully, we were able to secure our people’s jobs and found opportunities to grow even stronger. Crisis indeed reveals character. We are grateful to our never-say-die team, our collaborative clients, and our supportive sister agencies for making this possible,” said Ripple8 Managing Director Bob Vito.

R8 believes in disruptive solutions to change the dynamics of how clients run operations and the perception of stakeholders. As its strategies and content are informed and augmented by data-based insights, the agency has created a specialization in its integrated PR solutions called predictive PR.

DDB’s independent media outfit Touch XDA, Inc. won Bronze as Philippines Media Agency of the Year. One of the growing local media agencies in the Philippines, Touch XDA has enjoyed record new business wins, and comprehensive revenue growth across organic, new business, and agency partnership despite the pandemic.

We are grateful that our first time with Campaign Asia-Pacific has given us such honor. We dedicate this to our hardworking teams as well as to our clients and partners who have trusted us,” said Touch XDA Managing Partner, Dyan Rosal-Em.

Last but not the least, DDB Group Philippines won a Silver award as Southeast Asia (SEA) Best Culture for the second consecutive year. In the past years, the agency group had won several metals from Campaign under Talent Development, Corporate Communication, and SEA Best Culture categories. A testament to how DDB has nurtured and motivated the Group’s talents through purposeful and progressive training opportunities, a culture of holistic health, a fun and accepting environment, and strategic communication program.

DDB Group Philippines Culture Chief Anna Chua-Norbert said that she is immensely proud that DDB has been recognized as ‘Agency of the Year’ in the last five years, and thanks Campaign for all the recognitions that have served as inspiration to the group’s employees throughout the years.

We all know that 2020 has been an unprecedented year for everyone and I have been humbled to see how our people have come together to support not only each other but our clients during these extraordinary times. This award is truly a reflection of all the hard work and dedication of our employees, and the strength of our belief in ‘People First'. It is a fitting tribute to our people who have made all these possible,” she said.

Netflix announced an exciting new original series project, the Korean adaptation of its beloved Spanish original series "La casa de papel".

Set on the Korean peninsula, the Korean adaptation of La casa de papel will be directed by Kim Hong-sun, who has helmed TV dramas like The Guest, Voice, and Black and is known as a giant in the fantasy crime genre. Ryu Yong-jae and his team, whose credits include the Netflix original series My Holo Love and tvN series Psychopath Diary, will be the screenwriters for the show. The production is a collaboration between BH Entertainment and Contents Zium.

Alex Pina, Creator and Executive Producer of La casa de papel said: “Korean creators have been developing their own language and audiovisual culture for years. They have managed, like our series, to go beyond cultural borders and become a point of reference for thousands of viewers around the world, especially among young people.” He added, “That is why I find it fascinating that the world of La casa de papel is so attractive to Korean creators as to do an adaptation. The fact that the action is set on the Korean Peninsula also seems to me to be a milestone which I am really delighted about."

Since Part 1 premiered in 2017, the heist of La casa de papel has been storming the world. More than 65 million member households chose to watch Part 4 of the Spanish language series in the first four weeks of its release in April 2020, and the 5th and final part of La casa de papel is currently in production.

The international popularity of the Spanish series La casa de papel is proof that significant works based in different cultures and languages can be widely distributed by Netflix and loved by audiences worldwide. With its production of 12 episodes of the Korean adaptation, Netflix is expected to breathe new life into the familiar storyline and bring the material afresh to global audiences.
