'Shopee Bayanihan' Highlights the Transformative Power of e-Commerce and How it Changes Lives

In the face of adversity, Filipinos have always risen above every challenge by fostering the spirit of bayanihan. This spirit of community and togetherness is what Shopee recognized and strived for when it first launched Shopee Bayanihan — its umbrella CSR arm that aims to harness the power of technology to serve its customers, sellers, partner riders, and all Filipinos across the country.

Today, Shopee Bayanihan continues to evolve as a multifaceted program with various initiatives that cater to the needs of Filipinos. Each of these initiatives are grounded in its main mission to better the lives of the underserved through technology - to be there for every Filipino through every hardship and victory.

In line with these efforts, Shopee highlights the inspiring stories of five individuals, and how Shopee was able to support them in their time of need and help improve their lives. Watch the full video here.

Roel, Shopee Xpress Partner Rider (TransOrient Agency): A hardworking father who strives to provide

Roel’s journey with Shopee Xpress started when he joined the TransOrient Agency and was placed in the Bacoor Hub. Prior to that, he admitted that he was struggling to make ends meet. By becoming a Shopee Xpress partner rider, he was able to provide for his family and send his children to school. “Kapag ako sumuko pa, paano na sila? Wala namang lalaban sa pamilya natin kung hindi tayo,” Roel says.

Roel shared that one of his happiest moments was when his son asked him to wear his Shopee Xpress uniform at his graduation ceremony. He realized that his son was very proud of him, and appreciated everything he had done. “Nabago ng Shopee ang buhay ko at ng pamilya ko. Ako ay isang proud Shopee Xpress rider!” says Roel.

Virginia, Shopee Bayanihan: Typhoon Odette Beneficiary: Conquering fear as one community

Virginia is one of the many beneficiaries of Shopee Bayanihan’s Typhoon Odette Support. She shared that her experience with the typhoon left her frightened and worried about the future of her family and her home. “I was shivering at the thought of what could happen because both my husband and I are sick. I didn’t know what to do. All I could do was pray for the strong winds to stop.” she says.

When Shopee Bayanihan’s Typhoon Odette Support rolled out to affected areas in Cebu, Bohol, and Surigao, Virginia and her fellow residents of Tinago, Cebu, were one of the beneficiaries that received relief packs and other essentials. “We’re grateful that help came to our community. We were not really expecting this, and had no idea that Shopee was going to be there in our time of need,” she says.

Mark and Angel, Shopee Sellers: Fighting for their family by driving their business forward

Mark and Angel nearly lost their daughter to biliary atresia, a rare condition that affected her liver and required her to undergo an expensive procedure abroad. In order to provide for their family and help pay for Avery’s maintenance medicine, the couple decided to start their business, Live Pillow. Before taking their business online, they struggled to generate sales. “May mga araw po talaga na wala kaming benta, at sobrang lungkot po namin ni partner nun,” shared Mark.

When they put up a store on Shopee, they were able to reach new customers, generating thousands of orders. Now, Mark and Angel were able to expand their business by having their own staff and warehouse. “Dahil sa Shopee, nagkaroon kami ng pangalawang pamilya at ang staff po namin ‘yun. Lahat kayo, lahat tayo dito, pamilya.” says Angel.

Jocell, Shopee Girl ng Pook Dagohoy: Finding the best deals to support her family

Known as the “Shopee Girl ng Pook Dagohoy”, stay-at-home mom Jocelle shared that it was hard for her to find a way to save due to her family’s debt. “Nalubog kami sa utang. Nung nagka-pandemic, nawalan ng trabaho yung asawa ko. Nangungutang na lang ako ulit para may maibayad sa utang din namin,” says Jocell.

Through Shopee, she was able to save on all her essentials and bills. “Na-diskubre ko na pwede akong umorder ng mga diaper na naka-sale sa Shopee, kaya sobrang nakakatipid ako. Yung ShopeePay bills payment naman po doon po ako nagbabayad ng ilaw at tubig para makakuha ng cashback,” she shares.

Today, Jocelle is able to manage her expenses better, as she is able to get better deals on her family’s needs on Shopee. “Parte na talaga si Shopee ng buhay namin,” says Jocell.

5 Things from Our Pinoy Childhood That We’ll Always Love

Most of us turn to our childhood for the nostalgia of simpler, more carefree times. A simple mention of a funny or meaningful event from our childhood is enough to get us reminiscing with family and friends. It instantly takes us back to a totally different way of life, making us miss the old times.

This is why we treasure items from the past. Memories and sentimental value make it difficult for us to part with them. Whether it’s things we used to enjoy as kids, pamana keepsakes from our parents, or little things we occasionally used to get as treats, these items from our childhood will always hold a special place in our hearts.

CDs and cassette tapes

Today, we listen to our favorite artists with just a few taps on our smartphones. But back in the day, we still had to go to our favorite music store to grab a cassette tape or CD of their latest and greatest hits. Then, we would pop them into either a Walkman or CD player to listen to the tracks. For music lovers and collectors with a taste for the classics, keeping most, if not all, these music mementos is a must!

Piko, tumbang preso, and other street games

Before the days of smartphones and online games, us Pinoy kids had the streets as our playground. Playtime meant spending an entire afternoon with our friends outdoors. Who doesn’t remember classic street games like piko, tagu-taguan, luksong baka, and tumbang preso, or the thrill of running away from the taya in a round of habulan? We all looked forward to those fun times spent outdoors, and to this day, many of us still know how to play these games by heart!

Jolen, jackstones, and other classic Pinoy toys

Aside from the street games mentioned above, many of us also loved collecting, trading, and playing with simple toys like yo-yos, paper dolls, jolen, jackstones, and teks. Some of us would even painstakingly make our own tirador and saranggola, with plenty of help from our parents. One thing is for sure - we’re all guilty of spending a big portion of our baon to expand our collection of these classic toys!

Film cameras

Many of us were also guilty of playing with family cameras as kids. It was always fun pretending to be photographers, taking snapshots of things we found interesting. However, with only 24 or 36 shots in a roll of film, we had to make every shot count! Fortunately, with film photography now getting popular again, we can still keep shooting with these vintage cameras and relive our days as budding photographers!

Jolly Spaghetti

Part of every Filipino’s childhood is rushing to Jollibee to have their favorite meals like the sweet-sarap Jolly Spaghetti. Just one bite instantly takes us back to fond memories of celebrations and bonding moments with family through the years. There’s no surprise that the meatiest, cheesiest, sweet-sarap Jolly Spaghetti remains a firm favorite of both the young and the young-at-heart mula noon hanggang ngayon.

Jolly Spaghetti is available for only PHP 55 Solo and PHP 215 for a Family Pan in all Jollibee stores nationwide. Satisfy your cravings and have it safely delivered to you via the Jollibee Delivery App, JollibeeDelivery.com, or #87000. Also available for Dine-in, Drive-Thru, and Take Out!

4 Big Screen Romances that Show Love Isn't Always Sunshine and Rainbows

Everyone aspires to be in a smooth-sailing relationship that is free of conflicts and mistakes, but as many people would agree with, love is often a bumpy ride that requires vast patience and understanding.

This September, cable channel Cinema One screens four complicated movie relationships that depict just how messy romantic affairs can be while also teaching viewers valuable lessons on trust and loyalty.

1. Man secretly woos his crush virtually by pretending to be someone else

Complicated seems to be an understatement in describing the story of the 2016 film “Vince and Kath and James,” where Vince (Joshua Garcia) agrees to covertly court Kath (Julia Barretto) via text in lieu of his cousin James (Ronnie Alonte). With Vince unable to hide his real feelings for Kath, will the three of them ever find the genuine love they deserve?

2. Longtime lovers break up, struggle with heartbreak, then realize they still love each other

Who can ever forget the classic love story of Popoy (John Lloyd Cruz) and Basha (Bea Alonzo) in “One More Chance?” The 2007 Star Cinema favorite tells the story of how Basha feels suffocated by her controlling boyfriend Popoy, who falls at his lowest after their separation. Once they have new persons in their life though, the two eventually realize they still have feelings for each other, but will they give their love one more shot?

3. Wife discovers her husband is having an affair with a cunning mistress

The 2011 romantic drama film “No Other Woman” may seem like the typical ‘kabit’ movie at first glance, but the remarkable performances of Cristine Reyes as wife Charmaine and Anne Curtis as mistress Kara truly made the film stand out. Derek Ramsay plays the husband Ram, whose cheating with Kara causes a rift with his wife. Can they still fix their marriage or will he choose Kara?

4. Two students enter into a sham romance agreement to make the guy’s ex jealous

Perhaps one of Kathryn Bernardo and Daniel Padilla’s best movies to date, “She’s Dating the Gangster” is a 2014 adaptation of a Wattpad hit that narrates the story of Athena and campus heartthrob Kenji’s unforgettable love story. Despite her initial repulsion for Kenji, Athena soon discovers a softer side of him and they fall in love. But will their relationship stand the tests ahead of them?

Don’t miss these movies this month on Cinema One’s Romance Central block every Sunday at 5 pm, starting with “Vince and Kath and James” this Sept. 4, “One More Chance” on Sept. 11, “No Other Woman” on Sept. 18, and “She’s Dating the Gangster” on Sept. 25.

Before Star Cinema heads back to movie theaters in November, catch some of its digitally restored masterpieces on Cinema One’s Restored Cinema block Sundays at 9 pm, with “Bagong Buwan” airing on Sept. 4, “Bata, Bata, Paano Ka Ginawa?” on Sept. 11, “Eskapo” on Sept. 18, and “Tanging Yaman” on Sept. 25.

More must-see flicks will be shown via the Monday Drama block every 9 pm, including “Alagwa” (Sept. 5), “One More Try” (Sept. 12), “Honor Thy Father” (Sept. 19), and “Three Words To Forever” (Sept. 26).

Meanwhile, the cable channel will also air Jericho Rosales’ films “Nasaan Ka Man” (Sept 5), “I’ll Be There” (Sept. 6), “Pacquiao: The Movie” (Sept. 7), “Noon at Ngayon” (Sept. 8), and “Ngayong Nandito Ka” (Sept. 9) as well as Erich Gonzales-starrers “Corazon: Ang Unang Aswang” (Sept. 19), “Once a Princess” (Sept. 20), “Suddenly It’s Magic” (Sept. 21), “We Will Not Die Tonight” (Sept. 22), and “I Do” (Sept. 23) on its Star Cinema Primetime block weeknights at 7 pm.

Cinema One, the home of Filipino blockbuster movies, is available on Cignal ch. 45, SKYcable ch. 56, and other local cable service providers. For more information, follow Cinema One on Facebook, Twitter, TikTok, YouTube, and Instagram.

Moira Dela Torre, Gigi De Lana, and BGYO's Music Reach Millions of Streams on Spotify, YouTube

Kapamilya artists Moira Dela Torre, Gigi De Lana, and BGYO show no signs of slowing down when it comes to demonstrating the impact of Original Pilipino Music (OPM) as some of their songs recently recorded streaming milestones on Spotify and YouTube.

Moira, who breached one billion all-time streams on Spotify last December, continues to prove her songwriting talent and unique storytelling through music as two of her recent singles “Kumpas” and “Dito Ka Lang” recorded millions of digital streams.

The theme song of “2 Good 2 Be True” starring Kathryn Bernardo and Daniel Padilla “Kumpas” has so far garnered over 15.5 million plays on Spotify and accumulated more than 17 million views on YouTube which include its lyric video, lyric visualizer, and official audio.

On the other hand, “Dito Ka Lang,” Moira’s Tagalog interpretation of “Flower of Evil’s” theme song “In My Heart,” has already earned over 2.6 million YouTube views and a million Spotify streams. The song serves as a calming element in the turbulent relationship of Piolo Pascual and Lovi Poe in the weekly series.

Meanwhile, breakout singer Gigi De Lana’s version of “Bakit Nga Ba Mahal Kita” - the very song she performed online that made her viral - has also reached 1.1 million streams on Spotify. It is part of Gigi’s eponymous debut album released this January.

BGYO also continues to reap career highlights as Gelo, Akira, JL, Mikki, and Nate’s “Best Time” single, the theme song of the popular youth series “He’s Into Her” season 2, now has over 1.1 million streams on Spotify. BGYO and sibling group BINI were also among the four P-Pop groups that won Group of the Year at the recent TikTok PH Awards 2022.

Gloc-9 Releases New Song “Di Umiinom” Featuring Hero from His 25th Anniversary Album 'Pilak'

Five down, three more to go!

Our Paboritong Makata moves along his lyrical journey with what will be his Pilak album, a musical celebration to mark his 25 illustrious years in the Philippine music industry.

Before the month of August ends, Gloc-9 unveils "Di Umiinom", the 5th single for this upcoming anniversary album and this time around, he shares limelight with Hero, another young buck in the Asintada Management's stable of talents.

Sometimes when someone gets badly hurt and reaches their breaking point, they tend to perform deeds that they don’t usually do, or haven’t done before. Perhaps that act is a coping mechanism to escape all the pain and sadness that they feel. That’s how the song “Di Umiinom” was formulated by the veteran rapper.

In this special track, he taps the rising hip-hop star Hero to further elevate the overall vibe with his technical bars and carefully honed rhymes. Their tandem’s verses are captivating, intoxicating, infused with gloom as they address the sad and painful story with utmost conviction. Truly, the theme of this song is something fresh and something that the one and only Makata Sa Pinas haven’t attempted in the past, a reason he is very much excited for this release. Moreover, Thyro Alfaro once again delivered the goods and provided awesome mixing and arrangement.

This special release comes alongside a vibrant music video directed and edited by Aaron Maagma. (WATCH HERE)

Since Gloc-9 embarked on a US tour for the OPM Summerfest events there along with other iconic local acts, he was no longer able to film his parts here in the Philippines. However, because of the sheer dedication to his craft, our Paboritong Makata found a way to deliver his parts for the music video, special thanks to Mark Escueta, who's band Rivermaya was in the concert series with him. They shot it during the New York leg of the tour using his trusty Samsung S22+ or in his own words “Para-paraan lang talaga.” On the other hand, Hero's parts were filmed at Tipsy Pig in Quezon City.

This is the third collaboration between the Gloc-9 and Hero, with the previous two garnering more than 1.2 million in YouTube viewership. "Di Umiinom" is now streaming on all digital platforms under Universal Records.

Stream “Di Umiinom” on Spotify, Apple Music and other streaming platforms worldwide.

Janella Salvador Channels Sexy Valentine in METRO Digital Covers

Janella Salvador stars in her sexiest cover feature to date.

The latest Metro cover girl channels the feistiness of her character, Valentina, in ABS-CBN’s take on beloved Mars Ravelo classic “Darna.”

It is the first time this 24-year-old actress is portraying the role of a villain in her decade-long entertainment career, making the experience both challenging and exciting at the same time. From debuting as the teen darling in “Be Careful With My Heart” 10 years ago, she returns on screen sexier and more empowered than ever, after giving birth to her son Jude.

In JRB Creative Production’s modern adaptation of “Darna,” Janella is set to showcase duality with her characters Regina, a fearless lawyer and vlogger, and Valentina, the serpentine queen who is Darna’s ultimate rival.

“[Valentina is] very different from everything I’ve played before. Usually, mabait, or [ako] ’yung inaapi. This time, I’m the bad guy,” Janella told us with a smile. “When I read some of the sequences, the script, I fell in love with [Valentina] because it’s really different and she’s [a] kontrabida with a heart.”

This cover was photographed by Seven Barretto of Studio 7 Manila, with conceptualization by Christina Lopez and creative direction by Erwin Botin of Botin Studios. The shoot was executed under the supervision of Metro People section editor Grace Libero-Cruz. Janella’s glam team was composed of makeup artist Carissa Cielo Medved, hair stylist Mark Rosales, and fashion stylist Perry Tabora along with his associate Kris de Leon. Gian Escamillas was in charge of the video executions. Photography assistants Claude Villahermosa and Dariel Miraflor and staffers Red Dimaandal (Metro managing Editor) and Raff Colmenar (Metro art director) were also part of the shoot. The cover story was written by Metro staff writer Renee Nuevo.

Janella’s latest Metro covers are in collaboration with JRB Creative Production and Star Magic as part of the #MetroXStarMagic30 series of covers in celebration of the talent management’s 30th anniversary.

Miguel Tanfelix and Ysabel Ortega’s First Team-up Series “What We Could Be” Premieres August 29 on GMA Telebabad

GMA-7 and Quantum Films bring to light the feel-good and inspiring series 'What We Could Be' beginning this August 29 on GMA Telebabad.

Known for producing box office movies like 'English Only Please', '#WalangForever', 'Ang Babae sa Septic Tank' and 'Ekstra,' Quantum Films now ventures into the TV scene in collaboration with the Philippines' leading broadcast company, GMA Network.

Three of the country's sought-after and talented stars headline this much awaited primetime soap: Miguel Tanfelix as Franco, Ysabel Ortega as Cynthia and Yasser Marta as Lucas.

Miguel shares that this is by far the most mature role he has ever portrayed, "Isa ito sa mga dream role ko, someone with a complex background kaya very mysterious. Perfect project din siya para sa age namin dahil ito 'yung phase na ang daming uncertainties sa buhay, hindi pa masyadong kilala ang sarili and may mga what ifs."

Ysabel, on the other hand, admits that she feels pressured on her first lead role, "Definitely kinakabahan ako pero at the same time, confident ako na maganda ang nagawa namin. Nakatulong din sa akin 'yung support system at teamwork namin ni Miguel. This project is a good chance for us to experiment and learn as actors."

Yasser considers this show as a major turning point in his career, "Ang laking project nito at achievement siya sa buhay ko. Nagsimula ako from scratch sa showbiz and ngayon, binigyan ako ng opportunity to work with a great cast. Para sa akin, kahit ano namang i-offer na project, lagi ko lang binibigay ang best ko."

Set in the quaint town of Sta. Barbara, the series follows the relatable story of three young individuals who juggle personal aspirations, family problems and relationship issues while reaching for their dreams.

Cynthia is a determined young woman who came from a poor but happy family. She works as a nurse to sustain the needs of her loved ones. In an unfortunate event, Cynthia was laid off from her job which leads her to take on a new gig as a homecare nurse for a grumpy old lady.

As she navigates this new journey, challenges come along the way. She then finds support from her family and a stranger named Franco.

He is charismatic and an asset in the world of business, but he hides many deep secrets and heartaches. Later on, Cynthia falls in love with Franco but as their relationship deepens, Franco shows his other side. She begins doubting him and questions if he is still worth fighting for.

Meanwhile, Lucas enters the life of Cynthia. Behind his romantic playboy persona is actually a very sensitive guy. Lucas wants to break away from his dysfunctional family and build one filled with honesty. He will also try to mend Cynthia's broken heart.

Is succeeding both in relationship and in career simply not possible? How far must someone go and sacrifice for the sake of his/her family?

Joining them is a powerhouse cast of some of the country's most respected artists in film and television: Cinemalaya 2022 Best Supporting Actor Mr. Soliman Cruz as Tirso, the exemplary father of Cynthia; Aleck Bovick as Melba, the devoted and wise mother of Cynthia; Pamela Prinster as Criselda, the happy-go-lucky city girl who got lost in Sta. Barbara; Hailey Mendes as Vera, the spoiled daughter of a gangster; Lia Salvador as Eloisa, the supportive adoptee of Cynthia's family; Bimbo Bautista as Gabby, the father of Lucas who is involved in a family conflict; EJ Jallorina, as Ate V, the optimistic and funny best friend of Cynthia; Joel Saracho as Mang Tonyo, a man full of wisdom and a witness to the dark past of Franco's family; Art Acuña as Bruno, a gangster who is trying to change and become a businessman; Vince Crisostomo as Justin, the brother of Cynthia who is under a lot of pressure as a teenager; Joyce Ann Burton as Helen, the strict and overprotective mother of Franco; and Ms. Celeste Legaspi as Lola Leonora, an ill-tempered grandma taken care of by Cynthia.

GMA's First Vice President for Program Management Department Joey R. Abacan reveals why the network green-lighted the first collaboration with Quantum Films, "It was a walk in the park and I wouldn't endorse it kung hindi maganda. When I watched the output, nagulat ako. Kasi sa script pa lang at pagkaka-direk, ang husay na. I hope masundan pa ang aming collaborations."

Quantum Films Chief Operating Officer Atty. Joji Alonso, in turn, is grateful to GMA-7 for giving them the platform to tell this heartwarming story, "I've been pitching kay Joey for so many years dahil gustung-gusto ko talaga gumawa ng TV series. GMA was very helpful in seeing this project through. Very smooth-sailing ang lahat and ang babait ng mga Kapuso."

Catch the world premiere of 'What We Could Be' – under the helm of award-winning director Jeffrey Jeturian – beginning August 29, weeknights at 8:50 p.m. on GMA and on GTV from Monday to Thursday at 11:30-12:15AM and every Friday at 11PM-11:45PM.
Viewers abroad can also catch it on GMA Pinoy TV.
