Thank you sa lahat, sa pag-alaga, sa concern. Napakaswerte ko na mayroon akong isang katulad mo.” Bianca said.

Corazon Aquino and Her Legacy Remembered

On Saturday, February 25, President Benigno "Noynoy" Aquino III, led the wreath-laying ceremony for her mom - the late president Corazon Aquino during the 26th anniversary celebration of the EDSA People Power Revolution at the Aquino monuments in Padre Burgos St. corner Bonifacio Drive at Rizal Park.

Read the President's full speech below:

Vice President Jojo Binay; Mayor Alfredo Lim; members of the Cabinet present: Secretaries Volts Gazmin, Rene Almendras, Sonny Coloma; Senator Nene Pimentel; Commissioner Cesar Sarino of the EDSA People Power Commission; Archbishop Chito Tagle; Bishop Gabby Reyes; Representatives Asilo, Trisha Bonoan-David; Mayor Junjun Binay; General Manager Jose Angel Honrado; Vice Admiral Alexander Pama; local government officials; fellow workers in government; honored guests; mga minamahal ko pong kababayan:

EDSA Revolution History Relived in "Matanglawin"

EDSA Revolution and its historical significance in the country this Sunday on “Matanglawin.”

Kuya Kim and fellow “It’s Showtime” host Teddy Corpuz literally and figuratively walk down memory lane, tie a yellow ribbon, and get to know the history of the road named after a certain Don Panyong as they commemorate the anniversary of the EDSA revolution this Sunday (February 26) in “Matanglawin.”

Get to know who Epifanio delos Santos is and why the historic road was named after him. Before EDSA came to be, did you know that this stretch of 24 kilometers was known as the North and South Circumferential Road and Highway 54?

It was even pegged to be named after American General Douglas MacArthur, national hero Jose Rizal, former Philippine President Ramon Magsaysay and in 2009, former President Cory Aquino for her role in the momentous bloodless revolution of 1986.

Kuya Kim and Teddy also visit famous landmarks about the 1986 Revolution to know what happened during the Martial Law and why yellow was the most popular color in town.

Recently, “Matanglawin” was recognized as the Best Educational Program in the 8th USTv Students’ Choice Awards given by the University of Santo Tomas.

Gawad Geny Lopez Jr. Bayaning Pilipino Awards Goes Global

Worldwide search for Filipino organizations doing extraordinary service kicks off this month.

Where there are Filipinos, there are heroes, and it’s time to honor them.

With this campaign line, firm belief and an international network of regional teams in place to make it happen, the Gawad Geny Lopez Jr. Bayaning Pilipino Awards is going global this year, the first time since its inception in 1994.

It is a huge and momentous initiative to reach out to Filipinos all over the world and recognize their collective efforts in serving their less fortunate Filipino brothers and sisters wherever they may be. We are truly excited by this development,” said Fr. Nilo Tanalega, SJ who heads Ugnayan at Tulong para sa Maralitang Pamilya (UGAT) Foundation (translated literally as Relations and Assistance for Poor Families). UGAT, a non-profit organization based in the Philippines, oversees the screening of nominations and selection of winners.

My father would be smiling right now,” said Raffy Lopez, COO of ABS-CBN Global which oversees the promotion and production of the distinguished award ceremonies. “He started Bayaning Pilipino (Filipino Heroes) with Father Nilo. It would warm his heart to know that ABS-CBN in Manila, TFC globally and UGAT, have expanded their long-running partnership to search around the world for ordinary folks doing extraordinary work in the service of the Filipino people. This is true to his vision and mission.”

The “father” is Don Eugenio “Geny” Lopez Jr., founder of ABS-CBN Corporation, the largest entertainment and broadcasting company in the Philippines. He is known in the industry as the “Father of Philippine Broadcasting”. The award, which was named after him, began after he learned of a Filipina maid in Hong Kong who got run over by a car in pursuit of saving a child. The award gives recognition to Filipinos (now as organizations) who in the face of challenges and difficulties manage to rise and emerge as role models of service in their communities.

We have honored so many Filipinos, but taking the search to a worldwide level posed major logistical requirements. We are so enthused by the energy and commitment of TFC teams in all regions in taking part in the project. It shows their involvement and love for the Filipino communities that they serve,” said Chit Guerrero, vice president for ABS-CBN Corporation’s Special Projects which works directly with UGAT in Manila for this project.

Gawad Geny Lopez Jr Global Bayaning Pilipino has kicked off this month. The search is open to all Filipino organizations in the U.S., Canada, Asia-Pacific (covering Singapore and Hong Kong), Europe (covering Italy and U.K.), Middle East, Australia and Japan. The criteria are as follows: (1) Measurable impact: scope and number of beneficiaries with known effective results; (2) Highlight the value of unity/PAGKAKAISA (effective elimination of selosan (jealousy), inggitan (envy), siraan (negative criticism), etc. or has effectively dealt with these either through interventions or through innovative methods); (3) Focused on service and/or an issue (poverty, health, education, etc) as felt either in your respective country or in the Philippines; (4) Transcend regionalism/parochialism; (5) Participatory/people-oriented leadership (as shown in the manner of how they choose their leaders and their acceptance thereof); (6) Promote Filipino values and culture and Filipino heritage.

ABS-CBN Global and UGAT Foundation encourage Filipinos, even in the Philippines to send in their nominations for outstanding organizations outside the Philippines who meet the criteria.

Deadline of submission of nominations is on March 15, 2012. Regional winners will be announced late May 2012 after a period of tight screenings and validation. The winners will be flown to Manila, Philippines for the national awarding ceremony to be held in June 2012.

For nomination forms and more information, visit www.globalbayaningpilipino.com.

Luis Manzano “Kapamilya Deal or No Deal” Begins this Saturday

You may be the lucky one beginning Saturday (February 25) as ABS-CBN’s hit game show “Kapamilya Deal or No Deal” returns for another exciting season this time, with its newest host and ‘lucky charm’ Luis Manzano.

Viewers should watch out for the ‘kulitans’ and basically how I interact with the contestants. I have a very very big shoes to fill but more than this pressure, I just look forward to enjoying the experience,” said Luis.

One of the country’s most sought after and premiere hosts, Luis takes on KDOND after three successful seasons hosted by Queen of All Media Kris Aquino. Luis is no newbie when it comes to the hosting realm and in fact, has already proven his worth in the industry as one of the hosts of “E-Live” and “Pilipinas Got Talent.”

Everyone is indeed eagerly anticipating what the Endemol franchise will offer this season and how many lives it will change in a snap.

Among the things to watch out for is the new Banker who would offer tempting deals to the studio player. New briefcase girls, now called 24K girls, will also do the iconic ‘rampa’ and hold the amounts that will change the course of the game.

A whopping P2 million jackpot prize is still at stake if the contestant chose the winning briefcase.

Since its launch in 2006, a total of 21 millionaires were named in KDOND. It is one of the most successful game show in the country, not only for its ratings, but for the honor it brought to Filipinos when it was chosen by “Deal or No Deal” USA as the only Asian franchise to be part of its world tour edition in 2008. ABS-CBN’s PR campaign for the event also earned the show a Philippine Quill Award of Merit in the same year.

Playing for a deal of a lifetime this season premiere is newest Kapamilya Carmina Villaroel. Will she be lucky enough to pick the right briefcase? Will Banker give her a hard time? Will she join Judy Ann Santos and Ryan Agoncillo, Maja Salvador, Gerald Anderson and Jake Cuenca, Arnel Pineda, and Aiko Melendez in the roster of KDOND celebrity millionaires?

Don’t miss the premiere of “Kapamilya Deal or No Deal” hosted by Luis Manzano, this Saturday (February 25), 6 PM after “TV Patrol Weekend” on ABS-CBN.

My Kontrabida Girl Movie Trailer Starring Rhian Ramos and Aljur Abrenica

My Kontrabida Girl Movie Trailer Starring Rhian Ramos and Aljur Abrenica

The 1st Philippine Popular Music Festival (PhilPOP) is Now On!

There are competitions for aspiring singers, dancers, actors, models, bands, chefs, even children wanting to be chefs but what about for songwriters?

With a local music scene widely dominated by imported music, the Filipino songwriter has become a stranger in his own land.

With this in mind, prominent names from various industries have come together to spearhead the creation of the Philippine Popular Music Festival.

PhilPOP is a songwriting competition open to all amateur and professional Filipino composers. By March 1, 2012, interested composers can start submitting their entries online at PhilPOP.com.ph. The deadline of submission is on May 10, 2012. Song entries must be in MP3 format and can be in any popular music genre or a fusion of known genres, in any form or structure. Each entry must not exceed four minutes. Contestants can submit a maximum of two songs, either as a sole composer or as a collaborator. Song lyrics may be in Filipino, English, any Filipino dialect or a combination thereof.

There will be three levels of screenings and during the semi-finals, the judges will choose the top 14 finalists. The final performance and competition night will be held on July 14, 2012 at the Philippine International Convention Center (PICC). The grand prize winner will receive P1 million in cash and a trophy. The second and third runners up will each receive a trophy and P500,000 and P250,000 in cash respectively. All non-winning finalists will receive P50,000. A People’s Choice award will also be given to the entry with the most number of online and text votes. The winner will receive P200,000 and a trophy.

The competition hopes to provide a channel through which Filipino songwriters can create new songs and discover new expressions or genres in popular music. The organizers of PhilPOP also hope to start spark renewed enthusiasm and pride in Filipino music by starting a brand new collection of freshly produced Original Pilipino Music (OPM).

Filipinos, in general, are musically gifted,” music maestro and PhilPOP executive director Ryan Cayabyab said. “We are well-known the world over simply because of our immense talent. But we are not just a country of talented singers, dancers and actors. With PhilPOP, I also want to shine the spotlight on our world-class composers and songwriters,” he added. The renowned musician also noted that this songwriting event is not a “revival” of another popular songwriting competition in the past decade.

Maynilad president and chief executive Ricky Vargas, who is also the event’s organizing committee chairman, further noted the significance of PhilPOP. “It’s high time we celebrate the artistry of the Filipino songwriter. What better way to do that than by giving them an avenue to showcase home grown talent and shine on a stage of their own.”

Meanwhile, business icon and PhilPOP chairman, Manny Pangilinan, also shared his motivation for lending support to the competition. “There are two reasons why I'm back in the Philippines after living in Hong Kong for so many years. I miss our religion and our music. You hear God’s voice in music,” he said.

The Philippine Popular Music Festival is jointly presented by Maynilad, Meralco, PLDT, Smart Communications, Sun Cellular, PICC, TV5, DDB Philippines and official press launch food provider, Via Mare.

Kokoy Romualdez Dead at 81

Former Leyte Governor Benjamin “Kokoy” Romualdez, 81, the younger brother of Ilocos Norte Rep. Imelda R. Marcos, succumbed to cancer, his son, Leyte Representative Martin Romualdez, told GMA News Online in a telephone interview.

He passed away at Makati Medical Center Tuesday afternoon. Rep. Romualdez said his father's remains will be brought to Leyte.

During the Marcos regime, Romualdez was appointed ambassador to China, Saudi Arabia and the United States while serving as Leyte governor. The Office of the Ombudsman last August filed a forefeiture case against Romualdez and his wife, Juliette Gomez-Romualdez, before the Sandiganbayan over their Swiss bank deposits amounting $5.19 million — now held in escrow at the Philippine National Bank. The case was based on a 2003 Presidential Commission on Good Government ’s (PCGG)

Complaint that the younger brother of former First Lady and now Ilocos Norte Rep. Imelda Romualdez-Marcos only had total net worth of P2,348,495.22 in his 1983 statement of assets and liabilities. “A comparison of respondent Benjamin Romualdez’ reported net worth in 1983 of P2,348,495.22 …with the US$2,000,000.00 initial deposit in SA 7676 will show the huge disparity between his lawful income and the secret Swiss bank accounts which he opened during his incumbency as public officer," the PCGG said in its 23-page resolution.

Grace Ibuna Gets Rights to Iggy Arroyo's Remains

Eillen Barry of TWM Solicitors and Grace Ibuna outside the Rolls building after the decision was granted in favour of Ibuna and Bernardina Arroyo-Tantoco
The tug-of-war in London on who has the right to repatriate and dispose the body of Congressman Iggy Arroyo to the Philippines ended yesterday afternoon when Justice Peter Smith of the UK High Court ruled in favor of Grace Ibuna and Arroyo’s second daughter Bernardina Arroyo-Tantoco.

Justice Smith granted the two a joint letter of administration allowing them to repatriate the late congressman’s remains in accordance with his wishes.

Earlier, Aleli Arroyo, the estranged wife of Iggy with her lawyer Atty. Lorna Kapunan, went to London to claim the body of the late congressman. But Ibuna, Iggy’s live-in partner stopped it via the High Court's 7-day, emergency injunction to prevent Arroyo’s body being removed from the funeral parlor JH Kenyon.

In Monday's hearing at Court 31 Royal Courts of Justice, Justice Smith asked an expert in the Philippine jurisprudence to determine the validity of Arroyo’s will in the Philippines.

Arroyo’s will was drafted in the US and he named his second daughter Arroyo-Tantoco to be the executor of the will. The will has two aspects: the disposition of Arroyo’s assets and remains.

Dean Ed Vincent Albano who was in Quezon City, stated under oath, via a video link that the last will which was drafted in the US is sanctioned by the Philippine law under Section 307 of the Civil Code.

His daughter Dina who was also in Quezon City faced the court via a video link. She confirmed that she is indeed the executor of her father’s last will.

She also testified that her father named her and Grace Ibuna in the late congressman’s medical directive, allowing her or Ibuna to decide on his behalf should he fail to decide for himself, particularly related to his health and the disposition of his body

It was made clear in the court that the first defendant, Aleli Arroyo was not named in any of the following binding evidence presented by Ibuna and the Arroyo sisters: declaration of trust, special power of attorney, health care directive and last will of Iggy Arrroyo.

Arroyo-Tantoco, as the executor of the will and "alternate agent" in the medical directive, was also queried by Justice Smith if would allow Ibuna to dispose the body of her father. To which she replied "yes."

In closing, Justice Smith asked Arroyo-Tantoco ‘how was the baby’ which elicited laughter in the courtroom. Iggy’s daughter could not fly to the UK and appear before the UK court because she recently gave birth.

Bianca Arroyo and Grace Ibuna were also both summoned in the court for cross examination.

Asked what awaits her in the Philippine courts, taking into consideration Aleli’s urgent petition for the custody of her husband’s body, Ibuna replied: "I don't know my Lord. I just want a dignified burial for my partner."

Aleli Arroyo sought a TRO and injunctions against Ibuna and several others. She claimed that under the Philippine law Arroyo’s body should go to her.

After almost four hours hearing the case, Justice Smith ruled in favor of Grace Ibuna and Bernardina Arroyo-Tantoco.

Eileen Barry of TWM Solicitors read the message of her clients outside the Rolls Building, Royal Courts of Justice:

"My clients Grace Ibuna and Bernardina Arroyo- Tantoco are very relieved that a decision has been made by the justice Peter Smith today granting them joint letter of administration to allow them to take the body of congressman Ignacio Tuason Arroyo home to the Philippines to be buried according to his wishes. It’s been a very painful and distressing time for the family and Grace and Bernardina are very thankful that’s they can now proceed to make the arrangement to bury their partner and their father ina dignified and respectful way and to allow everyone in the Philippines to have a chance to pay their last respects at long last to the congressman so that he can finally be laid to rest. That’s all the family would like to say for the moment and id ask you to respect their grieving."

"I just thank God my prayers were answered and thank our legal team who has done a great job, and we will see everyone home soon," Ibuna said, in a brief statement issued to the media.

Marvin Reglos Killed in Hazing

Marvin Reglos, a 25-year-old freshman law student from San Beda College, died from injuries sustained in an alleged hazing incident.

Reglos sustained severe bruises on several parts of his body as a result of his initiation rites in Lambda Rho Beta fraternity.

The victim was pronounced dead on arrival after his body was brought on Sunday night by two men on board a red Honda City with plate number WMF 174 at the Unciano Medical Center in Antipolo City.

Two suspects, alleged fraternity members Erick Edrosolano Castillo, 28; and Bodjie Amorin Yap, 24, were arrested on the same night Reglos was rushed to the hospital after they went back to the hospital, supposedly to check on the victim’s condition.

Police said the case is strong against the suspects after they found from their cellphones several text messages, supposedly from other fraternity members, warning not to speak out on the matter or reveal the identities of those behind the alleged hazing.

Yesterday, Reglos' father, Lucito, and sister, Lorvie, met with Justice Secretary Leila de Lima today to seek her help in the investigation into their kin's death and to request for a re-autopsy of Reglo's remains. De Lima has ordered the National Bureau of Investigation (NBI), an attached agency of the Department of Justice (DOJ), to conduct a parallel probe into Reglos' death.

Incidentally, De Lima co-founded an ally sorority of the Lambda Rho Beta, the Lambda Rho Sigma.

The San Beda College of Law, meanwhile, condemned the violent killing of Reglos saying it was an “unlawful and dreadful act of violence.”

The San Beda College of law condemns the system of brotherhood that employs violence, intimidation, intentional force, or reckless imprudence as part of any of its ceremonies or practices. Consequently, the school does not recognize their existence,” the school said in a statement.

San Beda also said it will cooperate with the investigation of the National Bureau of Investigation and Philippine National Police.

The school’s administration, together with the Law Student Government, have also formed a committee to conduct the investigation of the administrative aspect.

Julius Babao Leads Extensive Reforestation Campaign in ‘Krusada’

The planned uprooting of trees by the SM management in the expansion of its mall in Baguio was met with outrage despite its scheme to build ‘green’ and energy-saving buildings.

This Thursday (February 23) in “Krusada,” Julius Babao will travel to the City of Pines to inspect the disputed tree-filled area and interview Mayor Mauricio Domogan and the leader of the anti-tree cutting movement to know their views on SM’s development project.

The country has already lost so much of its forest cover to give way to the construction of commercial establishments. Even Sierra Madre, the country’s largest mountain range that that comprises half of its total forest area, is threatened by rampant logging.

In his continuing crusade to save the environment, Julius will campaign for reforestation or planting of trees to restore critically damaged forests. Aside from that, he also wants to reinforce the protection of forests against illegal loggers and boost support for forest guards who at times sacrifice their own lives on duty.

Julius has been actively involved in movements that promote the quality of the environment. Last year in “Krusada,” he exposed the environmental hazards of plastic bags and encouraged viewers to reduce, prevent, or ban the use of plastic and non-biodegradable packaging materials. Julius also urged the public to use reusable containers like eco-bags.

Listen, take part and be one with Julius’ crusade because it takes more than words to make a stand. Watch “Krusada,” which is nominated in the Social Issues/Current Events category at the prestigious 2012 New York Festivals International Television & Film Awards, tomorrow (February 23) after “Bandila” on ABS-CBN, or earlier on DZMM TeleRadyo (SkyCable Channel 26), 9:15 PM.

Dabawenyos Seek Justice for Marjorie Kwan

Dabawenyos condemned the killing of a registered nurse and urged Vice Mayor Rodrigo Duterte to immediately act on the murder using his “iron fist”.

Chinese-Filipino registered nurse Marjorie Kwan was on her way home to RGA Village, Paciano Bangoy, this city, when shot dead by riding in tandem gunmen around 11:30 a.m. Saturday.

Witnesses said Kwan refused to surrender her bag to the gunmen, prompting one of the suspects to shoot her. The victim succumbed to four gunshot wounds in her hand, chest, back and head.

Family and friends of the 23-year-old victim, through social networking site Facebook, condemned the killing and called for justice for Kwan.

A Justice for Marjorie Kwan page was created on Facebook and it already has 3,948 likes as of this posting.

In their Facebook accounts, several Dabawenyos also called on Duterte to immediately address the problem with criminals in the city.

The elder Duterte is known as Davao's “The Punisher” for his strong stance against criminals.

Police said on Sunday they already have the identity of the suspects, but refused to reveal them pending further investigation.

Before the shooting of Kwan, the residences of Davao-based journalists Radyo ng Bayan manager Peng Aliño, TV 5 Davao editor Jefry Tupas and Philippine Daily Inquirer Mindanao bureau chief Nico Alconaba were ransacked by still unidentified robbers.

It’s All About Love in Tambayan 101.9

When it comes to love, people tune in to three Tambayan 101.9 DJs who are ready to coach, to give advice, and even to help people find their match.

They write to DJ Jasmin, talk to DJ Chacha, or go on a dating game through DJ Charlie.

“Usapang Tambayan,” hosted by DJ Charlie everday from 1 pm to 3pm, has paved the way for many listeners to find possible life partners. In fact, the daily dating game has touched the lives of its listeners and even produced two couples who have been blessed with children.

I was even invited to their weddings,” the bubbly DJ shared. “And mind you, I was actually a ninong.

In his program, DJ Charlie features a “hotseater” who shares with the public the kind of person he or she wants to meet. Four callers get to chat with the “hotseater” for five minutes on air. At the end of the program, the hotseater makes a decision and they are supposed to have an “eyeball” or meet in person.

DJ Charlie says his program doesn’t discriminate hotseaters. Anyone can join his show and he always does his best to make sure that both the “hotseater” and the callers are comfortable. “There are some who are shy at first, but I help them open up. That way, they can find the person who will really click with their personalities,” he said.

If DJ Charlie is Tambayan’s matchmaker, then DJ Jasmin is Tambayan’s love counselor. Her program ““Dear Jasmin,” which was recently adjudged the Most Development Oriented Program at the 2012 Gandingan Awards, features letter from listeners, whose stories are turned into radio dramas. It is the only radio drama which airs on the FM band.

DJ Jasmin is very much hands-on when it comes to her show. She not only narrates the letter, prepares the dramas, and plays the songs, but she also gives advice, which isn’t always easy.

There are days when giving advice just comes out naturally, but there also times when I am also going through something myself,” the KBP Golden Dove awardee and Gandingan Awards’ Best DJ for 2012 laughed. “Heartaches actually enable me to become a better advisor!

Her skills were put to the test when she encountered a case of a love triangle in the program. A balikbayan named Ben wrote to share how he went to the Philippines to confront his best friend, Morris, who impregnated his girlfriend.

Incidentally, Morris was actually tuned in to Tambayan 101.9 on the day that Jasmin read his letter. A month later, he also wrote to ““Dear Jasmin”” because he thought the program could be a way for him to explain his side to Ben and DJ Jasmin could be a way for him to reach out to his friend.

Sadly, the issue hasn’t been resolved yet. But I’m still in touch with both Ben and Morris and I’m hoping the time will come when they’ll both be ready to talk to each other,” DJ Jasmin said.

As for DJ Chacha, whose program “Ano’ng Meron” airs from 9 pm to 12 midnight, it’s all about being someone whom listeners can call to talk about their love life, including issues that cater to a more mature audience.

One time, a male called tried to turn the tables. He noticed how DJ Chacha was always the one giving advice and thought she might want to open up also since she might also have her own problems too. She found it cute and was touched by the caller’s effort.

Other callers though have different agenda like asking her out on a date.

All I can offer is a dose of ‘mwahmwah-tsuptsup’ for now,” DJ Chacha laughed.

So tune in to Tambayan 101.9 and connect with DJ Charlie, DJ Jasmin, and DJ Chacha by calling 924-2684 or 415-1111. Watch the live streaming at www.tambayan1019.com . Catch DJ Charlie in “Usapang Tambayan” from 1 pm to 3 pm, DJ Jasmin in “Dear Jasmin” from 11 am to 1 pm, and DJ Chacha in “Ano’ng Meron” from 9 pm to 12 mn only in the 2012 Gandingan Awards Best FM Station awardee, Tambayan 101.9 San ka pa!
