Jiggy Manicad and Maki Pulido Investigates Child Abandonment, Military 'Abuses' in Reporter's Notebook

Jiggy Manicad and Maki Pulido Investigates Child Abandonment, Military 'Abuses' in Reporter's Notebook

In the middle of the night, a security camera captures a disheartening scene: a young woman leaves her child by the doorstep of someone else's home. After some inquiry, authorities tracked down her whereabouts. When asked why she abandoned her child, she said that she did not have the means to raise the child properly adding that if she only had a choice, she would have done otherwise.

This Tuesday, GMA's award-winning documentary program Reporter's Notebook will discuss the problem of child abandonment and what really drives many "unprepared" moms to desert their children. Are poverty and emotional inadequacy the culprits, or are all these just an excuse to evade the responsibility of being a mom?

The episode will also investigate cases of abuse against women and civilians involving members of the military. One case involves a 17-year old girl who is now being treated for trauma after being raped apparently by a soldier who had been wooing her. The suspect is now being held in custody together with two suspected accomplices -- all uniformed personnel. Another case involves a man in Albay who alleges that he was tortured by military men who had mistaken him for a member of the New People's Army (NPA). Until now, no one from among the military has been considered a suspect and the victim has not been given justice.

Last January, an international group released a report stating that the Philippine government has done very little in getting into the bottom of these so-called "military abuses." The report also revealed that most of the suspects in these cases have not been tried yet. What does the government - or the military - have to say about these allegations?

Find out the answers on Reporter's Notebook hosted by broadcast journalists Jiggy Manicad and Maki Pulido, airing this Tuesday, March 27, 11:30pm on GMA-7.

A New and Different Amy Austria in "Unos" Episode of Tanikala: Ang Ikaapat ng Yugto

A New and Different Amy Austria in "Unos" Episode of Tanikala: Ang Ikaapat ng Yugto

On Maundy Thursday, catch veteran actress Amy Austria-Ventura in one of her rare appearances on TV in the Holy Week Special Tanikala: Ang Ikaapat ng Yugto. In her notable performance and unique role as Lupe in the episode entitled "Unos", Amy plays the life of a loving mother who performs witchcraft to support her family.

She shares, “I play the role of Lupe here, a loving mother to her children. But since her husband is unable to support the family, she also does witchcraft which she learned from her ancestors so she could earn money...but she is a good person. For the family, for her children…she’ll do anything whatever it takes.”

When asked if she was challenged with the role, the actress admitted that she felt a little uncomfortable with some of the scenes, despite her being a distinguished and experienced actress. The reason – Amy now “chooses” her roles with conviction. And this happened after she experienced a life-changing encounter.

As much as possible, I don’t like to do horror films. I would, maybe, before when I wasn’t a Christian yet. But eversince I got to know the Lord, I don’t accept those kinds of roles anymore. I even have to do chants and rituals here because of my role as babaylan which makes it really uncomfortable for me,” explains Amy.

She adds, “I accepted this project because this is my commitment to the Lord, I believe this is my chance to share the gospel to the people. Plus the fact that they will really learn a lot from the story of Lupe.”

To prepare for the heavy scenes, Amy’s preparation requires more than just the physical and the technical aspects. She never forgets the most important preparation – Prayer. “I always pray for God’s protection and guidance. I even asked my friends to cover me with prayers because of the chantings and rituals that I had to do for the story.”

Amy also shares how she relates with her character, Lupe. As a mother, she knows how it is to love and to love unselfishly, especially when it comes to her son. According to her, her love grew even more when she met the one who really loves her unconditionally. In addition, she discovered the true purpose of her life and of her special gift in acting.

Before, I act just for the sake of acting as my job. I have to act because I am the breadwinner of our family. When I became a Christian, as much as possible, I do it for the glory of God.”

"Unos" also stars actors Alden Richards and Mike Lloren. Watch "Unos" episode of Tanikala: Ang Ikaapat ng Yugto on April 5 (Maundy Thursday) 5:00 p.m. on GMA 7. Written by Gin Sardea and directed by John Tan.

Will it be Big Four or Big Five in ‘PBB Unlimited’ Big Night?

Will it be Big Four or Big Five in ‘PBB Unlimited’ Big Night?

Tin Patrimonio named newest evictee. Biggel leads latest overnight voting.

Before viewers get to vote for their favorite housemate for the Big Winner title, the five remaining housemates of “Pinoy Big Brother Unlimited” namely Biggel, Divine, Paco, Pamu, and Slater have to first go through a special challenge that will give them the chance to grab another slot to add to the usual Big Four slots at the Big Night.

For the first time in PBB history, the housemates were offered the ‘Big Shot for a Big Slot’ task that will determine if all or only four of them will battle out for the Big Winner title at the much-awaited “PBB Unlimited: Big Night at the Grandstand” to be held at the Quirino Grandstand in Manila this Saturday (March 31).

If Biggel, Divine, Paco, Pamu, and Slater fail, one of them will get the boot. If they succeed, each of them will automatically secure a slot at the Big Night. What test will Big Brother give them now?

Meanwhile, mentions on Tin, who was evicted from the Big Brother house last Saturday (March 24), flooded Twitter worldwide, clinching two spots in the micro-blogging site. Tin’s eviction shocked many viewers as she usually dominated previous voting polls in the season.

Tin, daughter of basketball superstar Alvin Patrimonio, fell short in gaining support from her fans and managed to garner only 11.50% of the votes versus Slater (14.16%), Pamu (17.26%), Paco (18.39%), Divine (19.20%), and Biggel (19.49%).

Who will go head-to-head for the Big Winner title at the Big Night? Don’t miss the exciting developments in the season’ last week in “Pinoy Big Brother UnliDay” with Bianca Gonzalez weekdays after “Angelito: Batang Ama” in Kapamilya Gold and in “Pinoy Big Brother UnliNight” with Toni Gonzaga weeknights after “Dahil sa Pag-ibig” in Primetime Bida. Iligan City Expresses Gratitude to GMA Kapuso Foundation, Inc.

Iligan City Expresses Gratitude to GMA Kapuso Foundation, Inc.

Iligan City Mayor Lawrence LL. Cruz recently released a three-page resolution to express the province’s deep gratitude to broadcast leader GMA Network and its socio-civic arm GMA Kapuso Foundation (GMAKF) for the latter’s quick and comprehensive response when typhoon Sendong caused catastrophic damage in Southern Philippines last December 2011.
The said tropical cyclone claimed the lives of more than a thousand people and left more than 15,000 houses in the South either completely or partially damaged.

In the resolution, the Sangguniang Panlungsod of Iligan acknowledged GMA Network’s immediate assistance, which significantly diminished hunger and outbreaks in the most affected areas.

The resolution read, “…among those who swiftly responded was GMA Network, whose management immediately dispatched their reporters to Iligan City and Cagayan de Oro.” The broadcast company, thru the use of its online and traditional broadcast platforms, generated massive donations and sympathy for the victims of typhoon Sendong from here and abroad.

The resolution likewise detailed GMAKF’s relief and long-term assistance to the province of Iligan. The Foundation, having served as a “conduit for donations received from all over the country and even abroad,” distributed urgent needs like food, water, and medicines to the most affected individuals thru strategically establishing command posts in key areas in Iligan.

And as part of its comprehensive and long-term contribution, GMAKF erects 200 housing units in Barangay Mandulog, Iligan City to serve as relocation site of those displaced by typhoon Sendong.

GMAKF Executive Vice President Mel Tiangco herself recently led the groundbreaking ceremony of the Kapuso Village in Iligan. The said village will also house a barangay center, a water system and a school for the children of affected families.

The people of Iligan cherish such generosity and would certainly remember it, even with the passage of time,” the resolution added.
