GMA Network Profits P388-M in 1st Quarter of 2012

GMA Network Profits P388-M in 1st Quarter of 2012

Broadcast company GMA Network, Inc. (GMA) boosted optimism for a financial rebound at the latter part of the first quarter 2012 after industry-wide advertising revenues tamed down in the preceding financial periods.

In March, GMA’s top line surpassed the record made last year, even as consolidated revenues for the first three months dipped at a manageable level of four percent to P3.002 billion from 2011’s P3.138 billion.

The Company’s net income reached P388 million, a strong start from the heels of a lukewarm closing in 2011, but failed to match or top last year’s P534 million.

Television and radio airtime revenues wrapped up at P2.707 billion, while revenues from subscriptions, licensing, and subsidiaries came in at P295 million, higher by eight percent from last year.

Core business unit GMA Channel 7 led the pack with more than 90 percent share of total airtime revenues; while Channel 11, carrying the country’s number one news channel GMA News TV (News TV) increased its revenue record by seven percent under the QTV format from a year ago. GMA Radio, meanwhile, maintained the same top line level versus the first quarter last year.

GMA International contributed P231 million in the top line, slightly higher than the amount generated in the first quarter of last year, even with the appreciation of the Philippine peso against the US dollar, on the back of improved subscriber take up.

GMA International managed a double-digit growth in subscriptions for GMA’s flagship international channel GMA Pinoy TV (GPTV), which has almost 303,000 subscribers or over two million viewers worldwide as of May 10. More than 117,000 of these subscribers also subscribe to the only Filipino lifestyle channel GMA Life TV (GLTV), which has one million viewers worldwide.

Meanwhile, GMA News TV International is now seen in Australia, Canada, Guam, Japan, Madagascar, and the UAE. It will soon be available in Europe, Malaysia, and the US.

GMA Worldwide, Inc. (GWI), the program acquisition and syndication arm of GMA, continues to penetrate Asian and US television (TV) markets thru distribution of Philippine-made programs dubbed in local vernaculars. The syndicated programs, which are seen either on free or pay TV, generated more than US$280,000 this quarter.

The Company imposed financial discipline measures to maximize profitability for 2012’s opening period. Total operating expenses, which were programmed within budget, rose only by a low single digit to P2.046 billion from last year’s P1.989 billion amid higher production costs aligned with continued efforts to deliver superior programming and additional in-house produced programs in the News TV grid; and increased personnel costs resulting from expansion programs and modest take up in the Company’s manpower base.

Bulk of the general and administrative expenses for the period came from higher depreciation rate with the operationalization of the state-of-the-art archiving software Media Asset Management System (MAMS).

The Company’s earnings before interest, taxes, depreciation, and amortization (EBITDA) for the three-month period settled at P760 million, down by double digit year-on-year, but twice the EBITDA made from preceding quarter.

The Company’s balance sheet, nevertheless, remained strong with debt-equity ratios at zero level. With a debt-free operation, GMA’s total equity stands at P10.216 billion as of first quarter 2012.

On television, GMA maintains its nationwide household audience share margins over ABS-CBN that commenced at the opening of 2011. In April 2012, GMA led ABS-CBN by 6.1 household audience share points, equivalent to almost 1.1 million viewers in National Urban Television Audience Measurement (NUTAM), based on data provided by trusted ratings service provider Nielsen TV Audience Measurement.

GMA also led TV5 by a solid 20.4-point household audience share margin in NUTAM, which translates to almost 3.6 million viewers nationwide in favor of GMA.

The trending of audience shares for the three competing channels in the country’s key areas remains unaltered.

GMA still keeps commanding double-digit leads over ABS-CBN and TV5 in Total Urban Luzon and Mega Manila, respectively comprising 77 percent and 59 percent of total urban television households nationwide.

GMA was ahead of ABS-CBN in Total Urban Luzon by 13.8 points, which translate to 1.9 million viewers over ABS-CBN; and by 24.7 points or 3.4 million viewers over TV5.

In its bailiwick Mega Manila, GMA was ahead of ABS-CBN by 16.2 points or 1.7 million viewers over ABS-CBN; and by 25.2 points or 2.7 million viewers over TV5.

GMA’s lead is most pronounced in the morning and afternoon blocks, where it leads competitors across all areas by margins ranging from 10s to 30s.

The Nielsen TV Audience Measurement used by GMA is also used by 21 other companies including TV5; Faulkner Media; CBN Asia; 15 advertising agencies and three regional clients. On the other hand, ABS-CBN is the only major local TV network reportedly subscribing to Kantar Media, formerly known as TNS.

In Mega Manila alone, the Nielsen TV Audience Measurement has a sample size of 1,190 homes as compared to Kantar Media’s 770 homes. Nationwide, Nielsen has a total sample size of 2,000 homes compared to the lower sample size of 1,370 utilized by Kantar Media.

ABS-CBN’s Recurring Net Income Up by 1% for the First Quarter of 2012

ABS-CBN’s Recurring Net Income Up by 1% for the First Quarter of 2012

The consolidated net income of ABS-CBN Corporation, the country’s largest multimedia conglomerate, registered P306 million for the first quarter of 2012, down by 69% compared with P976 million in the same period last year. Removing the effects of the gain from the sale of Sky Cable PDRs recognized in the first quarter of 2011 amounting to P674 million, net income would have increased by 1%.

ABS-CBN generated consolidated revenues of P7.1 billion from advertising and consumer sales for the first three months, an 8% increase compared to the same period last year.

ABS-CBN’s advertising revenues reached P4.2 billion in the first three months of the year, an increase of 4% from a year ago. Consumer sales for the quarter amounted to almost P3.0 billion, posting a 15% increase from a year ago. Sky Cable continues to contribute positively with revenues increasing by 12% to P1.2 billion. This is mostly driven by the increased take up of its broadband service subscriptions which increased by 20% year-on-year. ABS-CBN Global revenues likewise increased by 3% year on year on the back of a 3% increase in overall viewer count compared to the previous year. There was double-digit subscriber growth in Canada and single digit growth in all other territories, except Japan and Europe where subscribers
declined.

Total operating and other expenses increased by 10% year-on-year to P6.1 billion brought about by increases in production costs, cost of sales and services , and general and administrative expenses.

As a result of the foregoing, net income attributable to shareholders for the first quarter of the year is at P306 million, 69% lower than last year’s net income of P976 million, but 1% higher than last year’s recurring income of P302 million.

Capital expenditure and film and program rights acquisition for the quarter amounted to P1.1 billion, 22% higher than the level of spending for the same period last year.

ABS-CBN maintained its national audience share and ratings leadership with prime-time audience share averaging 42% in the first quarter of 2012, with a 12 percentage point lead over GMA’s, based on the Kantar National TV Ratings.

For the first three months of 2012, 17 of the company’s shows were in the Top 20, with the following occupying the Top 10 slots: Walang Hanggan, Ikaw ay Pag-ibig, Budoy, My Binondo Girl, Dahil sa Pag-ibig, Eboy,Maalaala Mo Kaya…, TV Patrol (Weekday), Nasaan Ka Elisa, Wansapanataym, Junior Master Chef Pinoy Edition (Saturday) and Rated K Handa Na Ba Kayo?
ABS-CBN Film Productions, Inc. released five films in the first quarter of 2012. Three of them– Enteng ng Ina Mo, Segunda Mano and Unofficially Yours–topped P100 million in box office receipts, earning blockbuster status by local standards.

ABS-CBN Acquires Most Advanced Weather Forecasting System

ABS-CBN Acquires Most Advanced Weather Forecasting System

ABS-CBN News and Current Affairs, the country’s biggest and leading news organization, has begun using the most advanced weather forecasting system provided by Weather Central, a worldwide leader in providing weather data.

Through its various news programs on Channel 2 and ANC, ABS-CBN is now providing Filipinos with the most accurate and up-to-date weather information to keep them safe and informed anywhere in the Philippines.

Despite being home to famously dynamic weather, the Philippines has always had problems with reliable local weather forecasting. We’ve seen the tragic impact of weather-related disasters on people’s lives,” said Ging Reyes, head of ABS-CBN News and Current Affairs. Reyes explained that Weather Central would give ABS-CBN access to the most precise weather data, with remarkable tools for conveying relevant and easily understandable weather information to better serve the needs of its viewers and users across all media platforms.

Currently, ABS-CBN newscasts like “Umagang Kay Ganda” and “TV Patrol,” and ANC’s newscasts from “Headstart” (8 a.m.) to “The World Tonight” (10 p.m.) are using the new weather system’s interactive and engaging interface in its weather segments.

Weather Central, the most viewed broadcast weather system in the world, combines patented technologies and exclusive storytelling tools that enable ABS-CBN’s weather presenters to better explain weather forecasts and engage their audiences with its interactive technology and powerful imagery featuring cutting-edge graphics, virtual sets, map animations, and realistic images.

Recognizing the importance of weather to Filipinos’ lifestyle, ABS-CBN Weather Central will be very helpful to parents and students especially during the upcoming back-to-school season and families who plan to organize weekend trips because it features five-day forecasts, precise temperature data, and detects earthquakes.

It also uses Philippine-wide high resolution forecasts, which is not currently offered by any network in the country today, that enables ABS-CBN and ANC newscasts to provide locally relevant and pinpoint accuracy of weather information from where they are or where they are going. For instance, Weather Central can specify the weather in Quezon City vis-à-vis Manila, in Mandaue vis-à-vis Cebu, or Kalibo vis-a-vis Boracay.

Filipinos, meanwhile, can personalize ANC’s weather services according to their own needs online via ABS-CBNNews.com, or on their mobile phones through ABS-CBN’s weather app, which will soon be available to iPhone, iPod Touch, iPad, and Android devices.

The ABS-CBN Weather Central, the most modern of its kind in the Philippines, is another first from the country’s biggest and leading news organization. Now, Filipinos have a reliable source of weather information and can receive critical early warnings during the typhoon season by watching newscasts on ABS-CBN and ANC (SkyCable Channel 27), following @ANCalerts on Twitter, and soon from all ABS-CBN television, online, and mobile platforms.

TV5 Releases Statement on "T3" Suspension by MTRCB

TV5 Releases Statement on "T3" Suspension by MTRCB

TV5 deeply disagrees and questions MTRCB’s decision to suspend its daily afternoon public service program “T3,” one day after the Kapatid network put the Tulfo Brothers Erwin, Ben and Raffy on a 1-week suspension.

Here is the official statement sent by TV5 to Showbiznest:

News5 is deeply concerned by the MTRCB decision to place its Public Service program T3 under preventive suspension.

We believe that this oversteps the mandate of the MTRCB, and sets it on a path could threaten the independence and freedom of the broadcast industry.

Self-regulatory mechanisms internal to the organization and instituted within the industry and to which TV5 subscribes were in place, enforced, and ultimately effective in disciplining programs host Ben, Raffy, and Erwin Tulfo.

MTRCB’s action of placing T3 under preventive suspension raises the question of what else, other than the disciplining of the anchors, the government aims to achieve. The Tulfos have been sanctioned. What else is there for government to resolve? A preventive suspension suggests that the continued broadcast of the program would constitute a danger to the viewing public.

There is no such danger. T3 was conceptualized, produced, and ultimately classified as news and public service program. For MTRCB to even consider or suggest by its actions that T3 has suddenly lost all its purpose and value, or worse, poses a danger to the public such that it warrants censorship, sets a dangerous tone and could potentially lead to a dangerous precedent for all news programs.”

Kathryn Bernardo Feels Like a Royalty with the Success of ‘Princess and I’

Kathryn Bernardo Feels Like a Royalty with the Success of ‘Princess and I’

Kathryn Bernardo is thankful for the unrelenting warm support of TV viewers for ABS-CBN’s ‘royal drama,’ “Princess and I.”

I am grateful that we have consistent high TV ratings and now it’s even getting higher. So I really hope that the viewers continue to follow the adventures of Mikay every night because we are all doing our best to make it much better,” shared Kathryn.

Based on the latest data of Kantar Media, the trending and top-rating drama series topbilled by the ‘primetime princess’ Kathryn together with its powerhouse cast Albert Martinez, Gretchen Barretto, Precious Lara Quigaman, Dominic Ochoa, Enrique Gil, Daniel Padilla, and Khalil Ramos gained a national TV rating of 31.7%, or almost 15 points higher than the 16.8% national TV rating garnered by its rival program in GMA, “Biritera.”

Kathryn dedicated the success of their show to its first-of-its-kind story and the commitment of their team. She said, “Aside from the fact that our story is very light with a touch of drama which Pinoys love; one of ‘Princess and I’s big success factors is the great working relationship of the team especially with our directors, Dado Lumibao and Francis Pasion, because they closely monitor our characters, ensuring we execute it right.”

With Kathryn’s show shining in the Primetime Bida block of ABS-CBN, viewers cannot help but compare her with ‘Mara Clara’ co-lead star Julia Montes, who is currently one of the lead stars of another Kapamilya top-rating primetime teleserye, “Walang Hanggan.”

Julia is really like a sister to me, so there was never a time that competition became an issue to us,” said Kathryn. “I’m super proud of her because I know very well that their show is doing great too in the ratings. Actually, I’m a fan of ‘Walang Hanggan.”

Meanwhile, along with her hardships to get her father (Dominic Ochoa) out of prison, Mikay’s (Kathryn) heart will be put to test too with the coming of three ‘princes’ in her life. Who will win Mikay’s love - his bestfriend Kiko (Khalil Ramos) who just confessed his love for her; Jao (Enrique Gil) who visits the Philippines to look for himself and for the girl who took his heart; or ‘bad boy’ Gino (Daniel Padilla) who irritates Mikay at every encounter?

Don’t miss “Princess and I” weeknights after “TV Patrol” on Primetime Bida. For more updates, log on to www.abs-cbn.com or follow @abscbndotcom on Twitter.

‘The X Factor Philippines’ Begins Search for Next Singing Superstar

‘The X Factor Philippines’ Begins Search for Next Singing Superstar

The X Factor Philippines” brings together four of the country’s biggest names in the recording industry across generations, Concert King Martin Nievera, Mr. Pure Energy Gary Valenciano, international singing sensation Charice, and Asia’s Queen of Songs Pilita Corrales, as celebrity judge-mentors who will start touring the country this week and begin the search for the next Pinoy singing superstar.

It’s such an honor to be part of the show. I’ve been there. I joined singing contests and I know how they feel. So, as a judge-mentor, I’m just going to be kind but honest to them,” said Charice who is the youngest ‘The X Factor’ judge-mentor in the history of the international franchise.

Martin also expressed his excitement to work with his fellow “The X Factor Philippines” judge-mentors.

Gary and I have a great working relationship. Tita Pilita is my mentor. Not too many people know it though, but she was the one who discovered me and said that I have a future in the industry. Charice is the youngest with most experience so I’m sure she has a lot to bring so I am just excited to work with all of them,” he explained.

Gary, on the other hand, is just as excited as Martin to start the show especially on mentoring the contestants. He also shared his stand on the possible competition that may happen among the judge-mentors.

I am that kind of guy that if I challenge anyone - it’ll be myself. It will not be for the other judges because the other judges have their own idea on who’s going to be the next big thing. Whether I get to mentor the Boys, the Girls, the Over 30s, or the Groups, I hope that in the end it’ll be one from my group who will win. But knowing the judges we have, it will not be a challenge to put down anybody but rather bringing out the best in whomever the contestant is,” said Gary.

Meanwhile, Pilita, who is not new in judging talent searches, admitted she is quite challenged because the show is entirely different from the past shows or judging she did.

There is mentoring involved here. We are not just looking for the voice. We are looking for a personality you can sell worldwide. If we are looking for someone who sings well, there are thousands in this country, on every corner of the street but they need to have that ‘x factor.’ We can’t even define it but once we see it on someone, we would know,” said Pilita.

The celebrity judge-mentors will soon tour the country together with host KC Concepcion. KC joined “The X Factor Philippines” team during the first round of auditions and shared how she was blown away by the contestants.

They are really good. You will be surprised to see all of them. It is true that we have the best performers. For example, there is one carenderia vendor, wearing a simple duster, whom you wont believe can sing like Whitney Houston,” KC shared.

Sister's Piggy Bank Launches the Career of Biritera Roseanne Magan

Sister's Piggy Bank Launches the Career of Biritera Roseanne Magan

Sometime in December 2011, after arriving home from school, ten-year old Jinkee Magan saw on TV an advertisement that would change her life.

GMA Network announced that it was going to hold auditions for child singers who would star in a new program. The young dreamer thought that this was her ticket to stardom. Ever since she saw her idol Regine Velasquez perform on television, she has always wanted to be a TV star herself. Months later, the poor child dreamer becomes a child star and a household name: Roseanne Magan.

Born to Be a Star

Born Jinkee Mae Magan on February 22, 2002, Roseanne is the sixth of seven children of factory worker Juanito and housewife Rosemarie Magan. Though neither parent is a professional singer – and so are her siblings – Roseanne has showed signs of being a singing star at a very young age. At six, she was already competing in amateur singing contests. Since then, she was joining contests here and there - from barangay fiestas to mall shows.

The Audition

Roseanne just got home from school when she saw the advertisement announcing an audition for young singers who will star in GMA’s upcoming show, which will later be entitled “Biritera.”

Roseanne expressed to her mom her interest in joining the audition and asked her to accompany her. But Roseanne’s father was against the idea.

But Roseanne saw the audition as the opportunity she has been waiting for. She tearfully begged her mother to accompany her despite her father’s disapproval.

Thanks to the “Piggybank”

Roseanne finally got the nod of her mom and she was ready with her audition pieces – but they didn’t have enough money to pay for the fare from their home in Mandaluyong to the GMA Network Center in Quezon City.

Roseanne, accompanied by her mom and elder sister, arrived just before the audition was wrapped up. In fact, Roseanne was the second to the last to audition.

After belting the Regine Velasquez OPM hit “Isang Lahi,” she was asked to sing another hi-pitched song “Patuloy ang Pangarap.” Even if she didn’t prepare that as an audition piece, she easily settled the piece, which was actually quite familiar to her.

Lost Hope

Three weeks had passed since the audition but Roseanne’s mom has not yet received a call from GMA. She has put to rest any hope of Roseanne getting into the new show. For the girl, life was simply back to normal – or so she thought.

When Roseanne went to GMA for the second time, she was one of only four who were short-listed for the lead role of the new program, which she thought was just a singing contest and not a drama series.

The four candidates were trimmed down to just two – Roseanne included – until ultimately, Roseanne received the good news: she was chosen for the lead role. Only then did they learn that the upcoming program which Roseanne will star in is a primetime drama series.

Life-Changing Success

Asked how being an instant TV star has changed her life thus far, Roseanne paused for a moment to contemplate.

Roseanne’s Prayer

Roseanne’s dream of being a professional singer is fuelled not as much by her personal ambition as her desire to uplift the quality of life of her family. She may be young and could only do so much, but she is already thinking of her and her family’s future.

Roseanne’s TV series Biritera airs its finale episode on May 18.

Bea Binene belies rumoured ‘rift’ with fellow tweenstar Barbie Forteza; to be split apart with loveteam Jake Vargas?

Bea Binene Belies Rumored Rift with Barbie Forteza

Bea Binene, the lead star of GMA’s afternoon fantasy series Alice Bungisngis and Her Wonder Walis, belied rumours that she and fellow “tweenstar” Barbie Forteza are not in good terms. In fact, she said that they are “very good friends.”

Pero kami, we’re very very good friends. We’re very OK, and sa set walang ilangan, walang something,” Bea said in an interview.

Bea and Barbie are going to star as twins in GMA’s upcoming fantasy-drama series Luna Blanca, which according to the network’s press release is a sequel to Luna Mystika, a 2008 fantasy series starring Heart Evangelista.

Her character in Luna Blanca is not very far from her comical and bubbly character in Alice Bungisngis and Her Wonder Walis, which is also a fantasy series. Is she more comfortable with fantasy series than heavy dramas?

Bea’s team-up with kapuso tween star Jake Vargas was recently recognized by the Guillermo Mendoza Memorial Scholarship Foundation as the “Most Promising Love Team” of the year. How does she feel about the award?

I had mixed emotions: super happy, honoured and thankful. We (Bea and Jake) feel very blessed to have received such a distinction,” she said.

The Jake-Bea loveteam, endearingly called by their avid fans as “JaBea,” has gained quite a big following especially among teenage viewers. The two are almost always together in TV series and movies. Have they not gotten bored with each other?

Hindi naman. Kahit almost every day kaming magkasama marami naman kaming ibang napag-uusapan.

Sometimes, networks experiment on forming new team-ups to break the monotony of seeing the same faces together on television. Is the “JaBea” love team to be split apart soon?

If ever Bea’s network decides – JaBea fans knock on wood – to team her up with another star, she says that she won’t demand for anyone in particular.

Kahit naman sino ang ibigay sa akin ng GMA I will accept him nang maayos. At kahit sino basta, I’ll promise to do my best. Kahit anong show, kahit anong project, kahit sinong ka-loveteam.”

This year has been a fortunate one for Bea; she was never without a show. How does she feel about it?

At the same time nervous kasi panibagong story, panibagong challenge, panibagong show.”
