The season is set as CNN Philippines celebrates another year of expressing gratitude through the Christmas campaign, ‘The Joy of Giving.’ As a treat to its audience, the network has lined up special programs as well as giveaway promos.

CNN Philippines will give viewers the chance to participate in the Misa de Gallo or ‘Simbang Gabi’ masses - the devotional nine-day mass that leads to Christmas Day. It is a popular Filipino tradition that many might be unable to observe physically because of health protocols.

In partnership with the Cultural Center of the Philippines (CCP), the dawn masses will be broadcast at 5 a.m. beginning December 16 until December 24. Different parishes from all over the country will host the Eucharistic celebrations.

For those who prefer to hear the anticipated Simbang Gabi, they can watch through the CNN Philippines Kumu channel. The nine-day mass will be streamed live at 8:00 p.m. from December 15 until December 23. This is also made possible by CCP and Kumu.

CNN Philippines will also broadcast Christmas Day masses on December 25. Viewers may watch at 4:30 a.m., where Pope Francis will celebrate the Solemnity of the Birth of Our Lord from St. Peter’s Basilica, or watch the 3:00 p.m. mass which will be presided by Cardinal Luis Antonio Tagle from Pontificio Collegio Filippino in Rome, Italy. The Urbi at Orbi, where Pope Francis will deliver his Christmas blessing to the city of Rome and the world, will be at 7 p.m. on Christmas Day.

CNN Philippines will also broadcast two ballet productions from CCP as part of its holiday special programming. The Nutcracker Suite, Tchaikovsky’s sweeping music from Act II of the Nutcracker, will be brought to life through dances from distant lands. All wrapped together and spun by the Sugarplum Fairy herself, this holiday treat is sure to warm your hearts and fill you with the joy of the season! The Nutcracker Suite is choreographed by Adam Sage with additional choreography by National Artist for Dance Alice Reyes and directed by Carlitos Siguion Reyna. The Nutcracker Suite will air on December 24, 5:00 p.m. and December 25, 2:00 p.m.

Tuloy ang Pasko which will be broadcast on December 24, 7:30 p.m. and December 25, 6:30 a.m. and 6:30 p.m., features music by National Artist for Music Ryan Cayabyab and is also directed by Carlitos Siguion Reyna. It tells the story of Lolo Val, a Filipino in Los Angeles, U.S.A., who celebrates Christmas alone in the new normal. While the season is a time to reminisce past celebrations by his lonesome, Lolo Val’s Christmas Eve eventually turns into a joyous occasion as he reconnects with his old barkada through a video call. He realizes that celebrating Christmas transcends space, time, and conditions.

Smart Omega to Represent the Philippines in Mobile Legends World Championships in Singapore

Smart Omega, the official esports team supported by leading mobile services provider Smart Communications, Inc (Smart), will be one of the professional teams that will be representing the Philippines in the upcoming Mobile Legends: Bang Bang M2 World Championships in Singapore.

Happening on January 18 to 24, 2021, the M2 World Championships will be the first in-person competition for Mobile Legends since the pandemic began.

Professional teams from Japan, Brazil, Cambodia, Indonesia, Malaysia, Myanmar, Singapore, Russia, and the Philippines will battle it out in the biggest ML competition in the world.

Aside from Smart Omega, Bren Esports will also represent the Philippines. Both teams are members of the Smart-backed Philippine Esports Organization (PESO), the official National Sports Association that govern and develop esports in the country.

Esports athletes and management teams who will participate in the tournament will follow strict public health protocols during the games, and no live audience will be allowed in the venue to ensure the safety of the participants.

There are over 43 million gamers in the Philippines’ growing esports industry. This global competition would mean a lot to our mobile esports community and we could not be prouder to support our very own Smart Omega team as they represent our flag in the world stage,” said Alfredo S. Panlilio, President and Chief Executive Officer at Smart.

Our support for Filipino esports athletes through the years is rooted in our firm belief that our players have the skills, talent, and dedication to be at par with the world’s best players. We hope that Smart Omega can be an inspiration to Filipino casual players and fans to help them realize and pursue their passion for esports,” says Jane J. Basas, SVP and Head of Consumer Wireless Business at Smart.

Local Champs, World-class Athletes

Smart Omega is composed of six (6) professional Filipino Mobile Legends athletes, namely Kenneth Jiane “Kenji” Villa, Jeniel “Haze” Bata-anon, Salic “Hadji” Imam, Earin John “Heath” Esperana, Jankurt Russel “Kurttzy” Matira, and Adrian “Toshi” Bacallo.

The young and talented pro team already has several awards under its belt, including multiple championships and top awards for The Nationals, Just ML competition, Juicy Legends Pro Division, and top awards during various MPL-PH Series.

Two of the players have also represented the country in several global tournaments. Kenji and Haze both won gold for the Philippines under the Smart-powered Team Sibol during the debut of the multi-platform esports category in the 2019 Southeast Asian Games. Haze also has the Challenger Summit Singapore Champion and the 2018 Southeast Asia Cyber Arena (SEACA) titles on his resume, among others.

Powering eSports

Smart has always been active in the promotion of esports in the Philippines. Aside from supporting Smart Omega, the telco company has also mounted multiple Mobile Legends competitions nationwide. This massive support for esports has been made possible by PLDT and Smart’s integrated network.

In 2020, PLDT and Smart further accelerated the rollout of their fixed and wireless networks to deliver better customer service. PLDT's fiber infrastructure, the most extensive in the country, is now at more than 422,000 kilometers as of November. This fiber infrastructure supports Smart's mobile networks, which now cover 96% of the population and are present in 95% of cities and municipalities.

As of November, Smart has also increased the number of its base stations to over 58,000, while also rolling out additional 5G base stations as it accelerates its 5G commercial services nationwide.

In July, the telco unveiled the nation’s first-ever 5G-powered gaming hub and hosted the first mobile phone vs PC crossplay exhibition match via cloud gaming.

The mobile telco firm also teamed up with PESO and ESNAP to support the Philippine team to the very first Pacific Pro-Am NBA 2K20 Tournament, soon after their successful stint at the FIBA Esports Open.

More importantly, Smart also poured its support for Filipino esports athletes during the 2019 Southeast Asian Games. For more information, visit www.smart.com.ph.

Save the Children Philippines Launches "eSave Natin ang Pasko" via "Awit Para Sa Mga Bata" Digital Concert on December 18-19

Christmas is the most awaited season for most Filipinos, especially children, but the COVID-19 pandemic has dramatically changed the way the upcoming holidays will be celebrated - it’s going digital!

Save the Children Philippines is launching eSave Natin ang Pasko, an online fundraising campaign that encourages everyone to unite in saving the Christmas spirit through a series of joyous and meaningful activities to provide joy and hope to children. These include 22 million learners, who have been experiencing major challenges such as the lack of access to learning materials and internet connection, as they struggle to learn from home. The proceeds of the Christmas fundraising campaign will support the learning needs of children in poor households in Metro Manila, typhoon-stricken places in Eastern Visayas, and the conflict-affected areas in Mindanao. It will also support children with disabilities, those from indigenous communities and from hard to reach areas.

Even if classes are conducted through distance learning or will resume via face-to-face, millions of children will still need our support as they continue to be deprived of their right to education since their families do not have the means to support their learning needs,” said Atty. Alberto Muyot, Chief Executive Officer of Save the Children Philippines.

eSave Natin ang Pasko also promotes the importance of a nurturing home through the “Mapagkalingang Tahanan” advocacy – where every member of the family, especially children, receives the support they need so they learn, survive, and are protected.

“Mapagkalingang Tahanan” emphasizes the critical role of parents, guardians, and caregivers in the continued learning of children and aims to provide them the knowledge and skills to facilitate their children’s learning. Also, in keeping with the tradition of Christmas caroling, eSave Natin ang Pasko features “Namamasko po!” – a fun group activity by schools, families, and companies showcasing their musical talent and creativity.

eSave Natin ang Pasko will be highlighted by a digital concert entitled “Awit Para Sa Mga Bata” on December 18 where Gary Valenciano, Lea Salonga, Martin Nievera, Regine Velasquez Alcasid, Ogie Alcasid, Arnel Pineda, Bamboo, Gian Magdangal, Lara Maigue, Kayla Rivera and Sam Shoaf will serenade the audience in the Philippines and those living abroad with Christmas songs. The digital concert will be produced by prominent theater artists Menchu Lauchengco Yulo and Michael Williams, together with Save the Children Philippines’ Bianca Elizalde.

Catch Awit para sa mga Bata online on December 18, 2020, starting at 7pm. If you can’t catch the concert live, the video link will be active until December 19, 2020.

To watch the concert, make a donation through https://ticket2me.net/e/32182. Each ticket is P800. Your donation will provide one family with a Family Learning Kit to help children learn during the pandemic.

Donors and participants who will pledge their support to eSave Natin ang Pasko will receive tokens of appreciation and a chance to be featured on the social media pages of Save the Children and its Ambassadors Katarina Rodriguez, Xia Vigor, and Ria Atayde.

Education empowers children especially those in dire situations, and supporting their learning needs will save their lives and their future,” said Muyot.

9 Songs that Proved 2020 is a Superb Year for OPM

The year 2020 is wrapping up but that doesn’t mean that the quest for discovering great music stops because despite countless obstacles and several setbacks, this year still showed that no pandemic could hinder the rich and rising Original Pilipino Music (OPM) to keep on flourishing.

In case you’ve missed it, here are some of the song releases from ABS-CBN Music that topped the charts, fueled inspiration, and owned Pinoys’ hearts in 2020:

1. “Paubaya” by Moira Dela Torre

This heart-wrenching single only dropped last October but has already amassed over 14.1 million streams on Spotify, over 40.5 million combined views on YouTube and Facebook, and has sparked courage among its listeners to share their sad but inspiring love stories on social media.

With beyond 2.6 million monthly listeners on Spotify, Moira was again named as the digital music platform’s most streamed female local artist in the Philippines for 2020 - a feat she has held since 2018.

2. “Make It With You” by Ben&Ben

Local folk-pop band Ben&Ben never fails to capture the hearts of Filipinos, but its version of Bread’s “Make It With You” - released under Star Music and used as the theme song of the eponymous teleserye starring LizQuen - undoubtedly ruled 2020.

Garnering an impressive 52.9 million streams to date on Spotify, it was the second most streamed local song and the third most streamed song in the Philippines for 2020.

3. “Balang Araw” by Inigo Pascual

Being optimistic has been tough this year, but Inigo’s hope-filled track about believing in love’s perfect timing captivated listeners. “Balang Araw’s” heartwarming lyrics combined with its encouraging melody was enough to charm over 200,000 combined viewers and listeners on YouTube.

4. “Sana Tayo Na” by Darren Espanto and Jayda

The collaboration of two of the country’s most talented young singers may have caught their fans by surprise, but the success of their lovely track was predictable. At present, it boasts of over 634,000 Spotify streams, and its music video, which Darren and Jayda shot separately in Canada and the Philippines respectively, now has 1.1 million views on YouTube.

5. “Sabihin Mo Na Lang Kasi” by Zephanie

“Idol PH” grand winner Zephanie certainly owned 2020, given that aside from fulfilling her dream of being one of Himig’s interpreters, her music releases have also been embraced and loved by listeners. A great example is her single “Sabihin Mo Na Lang Kasi,” a melodramatic acoustic that highlighted her soft vocals which currently has over 461,000 streams on Spotify and combined YouTube views of more than 629,000.

6. “Chevy Cruze” by Miguel Odron

Released early this year, another “Idol PH” alum scored a hit with his debut single under ABS-CBN Music International titled “Chevy Cruze,” and that’s no other than Miguel Odron. Fans all over the world clearly resonated with his self-penned song born from a very personal experience, which has earned over 850,000 streams as of writing and has been streamed most in Thailand, USA, Indonesia, Singapore, Canada, Australia, and Japan, aside from the Philippines.

7. “Hindi Na Nga” by Sam Mangubat ft. KIKX

This empowering anthem off songwriter-producer KIKX’s “After Dark ‘The Final Hour’” EP is one that surely spoke to many who were struggling to let go of a lover that they once had, that’s why it’s a no brainer that it got more than 820,000 streams on Spotify alone, and 100,000 combined views on YouTube.

8. "HEAL" by Southeast Asian female artists

Perhaps one of the most profound projects initiated by ABS-CBN Music this 2020, "HEAL" brought not only inspiration but also aided Filipinos through #PantawidNgPagIbig during a trying time. The song, which united Filipino pride Jayda, Jona, Kyla, KZ Tandingan, Lesha, Moira Dela Torre, and Xela with Indonesian singers Rinni Wulandari and Yura Yunita, Malaysian artists DOLLA and Shalma Eliana, Singaporean talents Haneri and Haven, and Thai artist Valentina Ploy has currently racked up over 430,000 streams on Spotify since its release last September, and recorded more than 80,000 combined views on YouTube.

9. "RISE" by Eric Bellinger, Inigo Pascual, Sam Concepcion, Moophs, Zee Avi, and Vince Nantes

Another groundbreaking collaboration, Tarsier Records' "RISE" birthed the teamup of Asian and American artists for a cross-cultural track that aims to encourage people to band together in overcoming life's many adversities. An animated music video of the song honoring 2020's biggest heroes has also been released and the single has so far earned 430,000 streams on Spotify.

Bring these songs with you in welcoming the upcoming New Year by listening to them on various digital music streaming services. For updates, like Star Music on Facebook (www.facebook.com/starmusicph) and follow it on Twitter and Instagram (@StarMusicPH).

Newlyweds Richard Gutierrez and Sarah Lahbati and Kids Zion and Kai Only Trust Defensil Isopropyl Alcohol for their Family's Protection

Defensil 70% Solution Isopropyl Alcohol continues its campaign to be Filipino families’ ally in germ protection in the new normal as they welcome newlyweds, Richard Gutierrez and Sarah Lahbati, together with their adorable kids Zion and Kai, as their brand ambassadors.

Adjusting to the New Normal with Defensil Isopropyl Alcohol

Richard and Sarah, who got married in a solemn ceremony earlier this year, celebrated their new life together in quarantine. While being stuck at home was an opportunity for them to spend more time together as a family - planting, painting and playing all sorts of games, they also needed to go through a lot of adjustments as a family.

One adjustment that they had to do was to look for better ways to protect their family against germs, with the threat of the virus still continuing up until now. They found their newest ally in Defensil 70% Solution Isopropyl Alcohol, which promises a higher level of protection against germs and viruses.

We believe in innovative products. Not only does Defensil come from a company we trust, Defensil 70% Solution Isopropyl Alcohol is also recommended by experts,” said Sarah.

And since we use alcohol more frequently to sanitize, I also like how it not only kills germs and bacteria, but also has moisturizer to not dry our skin,” she added.

One way to prevent the spread of germs is regular disinfection of hands and high touch surfaces using a rubbing alcohol. To provide a higher level of defense against germs in the new normal, the Philippine Society for Microbiology is recommending Defensil 70% Solution Isopropyl Alcohol.

Created by Beauty Elements Ventures Inc, Defensil 70% Solution Isopropyl Alcohol kills 99.9% of germs to give Richard and Sarah’s family the peace of mind that they are well-defended. It starts to kill germs on contact and upon constant use, provides up to 12-hour protection.

New Normal Holidays

Celebrating the holidays is surely going to be different for the Gutierrez family this year. For Richard and Sarah, social distancing is something that they’re keeping in mind as they celebrate the holiday season, along with making sure that everyone sanitizes and disinfects using Defensil.

The family wishes to go on a local holiday trip with family bringing their new ally, Defensil. With this, Sarah shares three simple tips to fellow parents on how to keep their family safe from germs during the holiday season.

First, social distancing is a must. Second, always wear a mask. It is important for parents to teach their kids the importance of wearing masks, which help to prevent the transmission of the virus. And, lastly, always disinfect with an alcohol that makes sure you and the family are well-defended— like Defensil Isopropyl Alcohol.

Gloc-9 and Lirah Collaborate for Mang Tomas' "Macho Rap," Now Streaming Worldwide

Some matches are just made in heaven, as confirmed by the latest collab of OPM legend Gloc-9 and rising pop artist Lirah entitled "Macho Rap". With the angas vibe of Gloc-9 blending harmoniously with the saccharine sounds of Lirah’s vocals, the song definitely dropped some serious sizzle to the local music scene.

The seamless symbiosis of the artists’ musical styles is a delicious reminder of how Mang Tomas blends so effortlessly when pairing with any ulam. It was precisely this reason that made it such an easy choice for Gloc-9 to rep the flag of Mang Tomas. “As a creative, I gotta have a full stomach to keep the juices going,” said the artist. “And there is no better fuel for my appetite than having Mang Tomas on any and every meal I eat.”

When it comes to ulam, combination is everything. The multi-platinum rapper knows the importance of having a macho ganado sarsa to make his meals taste that much better. “You gotta have Mang Tomas on your food, it’s almost impossible to eat without it. I have to be quick on my toes when I write my raps, so it helps that Mang Tomas always gets me excited to eat. Kahit nga kanin lang na may Mang Tomas, solve na ako,” the rapper said.

Being an icon of Philippine music, Gloc-9 says he needs the most iconic Filipino condiment brand to make every gathering complete. The rapper trusts in the rock-solid reputation of Mang Tomas as an “all around sarsa” that can bring a macho ganado eating experience for any ulam.

The macho ganado fest doesn’t end here. An accompanying music video is about to drop, featuring none other than Benjie and Andre Paras, as well as comedian Kat Galang.

Machor Rap is available for streaming on all digital platforms like Spotify, Deezer, Apple Music, and Youtube Music in 240 countries worldwide.

From his heartfelt rendition of "God Gave Me You" to performing his latest single "Goin' Crazy" and dancing to the beat of BTS' "Dynamite"—Alden only showed how he has grown as a performer on stage.

"Alden's Reality" also saw Alden looking back on his career as an actor and thanking all his former leading ladies. In this segment, OPM band December Avenue joined Alden on stage.

Greeting him on his 10th year in showbiz were his fans and friends in the industry including Sanya Lopez, Christian Bautista, Mark Bautista, and Betong Sumaya.

Alden's fans and friends further showed their support to the Kapuso actor as they shared their experience online. The hashtag "AldensReality" became the top trending topic on Twitter Philippines.

Twitter user @rfjfan shared: "I actually enjoyed that. I liked the songs, the dance numbers, the intimate conversations. I'm so glad I was able to move to the YT link coz then it was like a VR, I could follow A everywhere. Thanks @aldenrichards02."

Another netizen, @zhymrssl, tweeted: "Thank you so much po sa @GMASynergy @gmanetwork and sa @Ticket2MeNet for Alden's Reality Virtual Concert. Sobrang bitin pero napaka worth it talaga. And btw, congrats and happy 10th anniversary @aldenrichards02 ang galing!"

"We would like to congratulate Alden for setting a new record of being the first Filipino artist to stage the first-ever virtual reality concert in the Philippines," said GMA Regional TV and Synergy Vice President and Head Oliver Victor Amoroso. "We are honored that we made history in 'Alden's Reality' with no less than Asia's Multimedia Star headlining the show as part of his 10th anniversary in the entertainment industry. Being one of the Network's prime artists, we take pride with having Alden work with us. And while we really aimed for a world-class production, the success of 'Alden's Reality' exceeded our expectations.
