Lolong Will Be Released Back Into the Wild

After months in captivity, “Lolong” - possibly the world’s largest saltwater crocodile captured - may soon find itself back in the wild.

In his report on GMA News’ “24 Oras” Wednesday night, Ian Cruz said the Protected Areas and Wildlife Bureau (PAWB) of the Department of Environment and Natural Resources (DENR) is currently determining the proper time when Lolong should be released back to the Agusan Marsh.

Lolong, measuring 20.3 feet, was captured in the Agusan Marsh in September after reports of missing residents. It now lives in a pen in Bunawan in Agusan del Sur.

Lim said Lolong is presently “doing very well.”

Lolong, according to Australian zoologist and crocodile expert Dr. Adam Britton, is the world's biggest saltwater crocodile in captivity. The Guinness Book of World Records, however, has yet to confirm this.

At present, Australia’s “Cassius Clay,” 18 feet, still holds the title as the world’s largest crocodile in captivity.

The “24 Oras” report said there were sightings of another large crocodile, believed to be Lolong’s mate, in the Agusan Marsh.

Meanwhile, environmentalist group Haribon Foundation said “protected areas” are needed for the survival of crocodiles.

What we need are protected areas kung saan makaka-survive ‘yung crocodiles in their natural habitat na walang masyadong taong nasa loob ng protected areas,” Don Geoff Tabaranza, Haribon’s research specialist, said.

Tabaranza said crocodiles become dangerous to humans when they stray from their natural habitat, which happens if they are not satisfied with available preys there.

One factor could be, ‘yung malalaking crocodiles they need bigger prey siguro hindi na sila na kukuntento sa maliliit na isda. They have to eat livestock or even human na maaabutan nila,” he said.

The report said crocodile attack on humans should be investigated first to determine the crocodile involved. Residents are discouraged from catching a crocodile on mere suspicion that it is the creature that perpetrated the attack.

The TV report said crocodiles in the country are mostly found in Isabela, Palawan, Siargao, Agusan Marsh at Liguasan Marsh.

On Valentine’s day, two other saltwater crocodiles – "Valentino" and "Valentina" – were caught in Palawan after reportedly attacking a human.

Meet DZMM’s Voices and Faces of Love

For those who are in love, have fallen out of love, or want to fall in love, they can turn to DZMM’s late-night anchors and programs who are ready to listen and coach on matters relating to the heart on their late night and early morning programs aired on DZMM Radyo Patrol 630, Mega Manila’s number one AM radio station, and DZMM TeleRadyo, the nation’s leading cable TV news and commentary channel.

Miss M or Rosel Manahan in real life, makes a comeback on DZMM’s early morning time block with her new show “Miss M Confidential” on Thursdays and Fridays at 1 a.m. to serve as an on-air confidant to people dealing with problems in love, relationships, family, and career. They can call to unload their most intimate secrets or consult their problems, while Miss M listens and coaches them to help them.

Radio is not a new medium for Miss M, who debuted on DZMM in 2001 with the program “Miss M.” She used to co-anchor the legal program “Usapang De Campanilla,” the showbiz commentary program “Mismo,” and on the youth-oriented talk show “U-Talk.” Recognized for her captivating voice and vibrant personality, Miss M knows her radio audience well.

It takes more than a voice to hook an audience. Listeners are smart. A pretty voice will only take you so far. The challenge is finding new and creative ways to make the show as entertaining as possible, but at the same time be a venue for people to speak their minds,” she pointed out.

Miss M said she does not want her show to be too heavy or be wallowing in heartache. “Miss M Confidential,” in her own words, is a show that allows her to connect with the audience on a very personal level. Beginning in late January this year, the show also showcases a playlist of sentimental love songs from the 1980s and 1990s to aid her in giving inspiration to her audiences.

I try to help them take small steps towards realizing the solution which they know all along. We really do know the answer but we just need help getting to it,” she said.

Aside from “Miss M Confidential,” DZMM also offers Joe D’ Mango’s traditional approach of taking up love problems in “Love Notes” Tuesdays and Wendesdays at 12 m.n. – reading a letter while mellow, poignant music plays in the background just before he puts his two cents in. But Joe’s trademark style is getting beyond the trivial; he strips down love conundrums right to their basics.

As he has always pointed out, he is not a counselor who determines what’s wrong and right for people in trouble, but is there only to widen their horizons. True enough, he puts out an intimate conversation with letter senders and makes them self-aware without telling them what to do. Aside from love advice, the show’s ‘Midnight Serenade’ segment also features popular and promising singers who serenade DZMM viewers and listeners live.

For the confused and brokenhearted, there is also Bro. Jun ‘Dr. Love’ Banaag and his award-winning “Dr. Love Radio Show” that airs twice a day on DZMM – the afternoon musical program with its catalog of classic sentimental songs at 1 p.m. and the counseling show at 11 p.m.

A professed Third Order Dominican, Bro. Jun or Dr. Love is known for his religious but bold and confrontational counseling method. His powerful words may point to the caller as the source of his own problems, but his clear-cut and conscientious reflections are what endear Dr. Love to his large following.

And lastly, DZMM offers “Lovelines” with Jon Ibanez and Dr. Yani Santos every Saturday, for light and sensible discussions on romance and relationships on “Lovelines.” The tandem’s own brand of counseling takes just the right mix of amusement from the humorist ‘Papa Jon’ (Radyo Patrol 35) and professional guidance from psychologist Doc Yani.

Lovers, friends, and families can find the slightest reason to smile just by listening to DZMM’s love anchors and not go through their problems alone.

So keep listening to “Miss M Confidential” on Thursdays and Fridays at 1 a.m., “Lovelines” with Jon and Doc Yani Saturdays at 1 a.m., “Joe D’ Mango’s Love Notes,” Tuesdays and Wednesdays from 12 m.n. until 4 a.m., and the “Dr. Love Radio Show” weeknights at 11 p.m. on DZMM Radyo Patrol 630 at DZMM TeleRadyo (SkyCable ch. 26).

Bernadette Sembrano Fights for the Mentally Ill in ‘Krusada’

People with mental disorders or illnesses are often subjects of mockery and are unjustly incarcerated or abandoned by the judgmental public that labels them ‘lunatics’ or ‘crazy.’

Tomorrow, February 16, in “Krusada,” Bernadette Sembrano will examine how the government attends to the needs of the mentally ill and if it provides adequate support and attention to mental health care facilities in the country.

We often forget that there are people with mental illnesses who need sufficient medical attention. We should re-evaluate if medicine and hospital confinement are their only options for their cure,” she said.

Bernadette has been actively engaged in missions that benefit the mentally ill for her involvement with ABS-CBN Foundation’s Sagip Kapamilya. They rescued the woman who figured in the news for living in a mosquito net in Guinobatan, Albay and the Reodava siblings in Aklan who have since gotten well.

Due to her experience with Sagip Kapamilya, Bernadette has also fought for the improvement of the conditions of mental facilities in the country. There may be existing psychiatric units and day-treatment centers, but most of them are located in Metro Manila and cannot be accessed by patients in rural areas.

Listen, take part and be one with Bernadette’s crusade because it takes more than words to make a stand. Watch “Krusada,” which is nominated in the Social Issues/Current Events category at the prestigious 2012 New York Festivals International Television & Film Awards, tomorrow, February 16, after “Bandila” on ABS-CBN, or earlier on DZMM TeleRadyo (SkyCable Channel 26), 9:15 PM.

First time nominees Biggel, Eting, and Seiichi, and Slater, who volunteered to be automatically nominated, are in danger of getting booted from the famous Big Brother house this Saturday, February 18.

Secret evictee and House Player Paco was also granted the same power and picked Eting who he sees as inauthentic and pretends to appear pitiable.

It feels so good to be home,” said the Filipino international singing sensation Charice Pempengco as she opened her Valentine TV special Charice: One for the Heart, which aired last Sunday on GMA-7.

As a Filipino, the Philippines may be her ‘home,’ but as an international performer, the whole world is her ‘stage.’

The TV special reaped a whopping 35.4% household audience share in Mega Manila based on the more trusted TV ratings service provider Nielsen TV Audience Measurement. This figure is notable considering that it aired during the latter part of the Sunday primetime block.

Charice: One for the Heart also trended in the micro-blogging site Twitter. Apart from the special’s official hashtag, #Charice and #Dancewithmyfather also made it to the site’s trending topics list. The latter began trending when Charice sang the Luther Vandross song, which she dedicated to his father who passed away late last year. The TV special was taped on December 5 last year, barely over a month after the death of Charice’s dad.

GMA Pinoy TV is available in the U.S.A, Canada, Middle East, Europe and Asia Pacific. For subscriptions and inquiries, visit www.gmanetwork.com/international.
