Select Puregold CinePanalo Films to Screen at University of the Philippines Film Institute (UPFI) Starting July 30

Top selections from the Puregold CinePanalo Film Festival will be screened at Puregold’s upcoming “Choice Cuts: Panalong Film Festival Rewatch” at the University of the Philippines Film Institute (UPFI) this coming July 30 to August 1, and August 6, 7, and 9. 

Eight full-length films and 10 student shorts will be showcased at the upcoming event designed to be perfect for those who want to relive the authentic, proudly Filipino stories from the Puregold CinePanalo.

“As we gear up for next year’s festival, we give another window for Puregold CinePanalo films,” said Puregold Senior Marketing Manager Ivy Hayagan-Piedad. “Good films are meant to be seen, and we want to give these alumni films the spotlight they deserve.”

The highlights of Choice Cuts include Kurt Soberano’s Under a Piaya Moon which won Pinakapanalong Pelikula (Best Picture) at the 2024 Puregold CinePanalo Film Festival; and Puschart Tales which earned its director Sigrid Bernardo the Panalong Direktor (Best Director) award at the same event. 

Other full-length films joining the line up include Eugene Torres’ One Day League: Dead Mother, Dead All, Carlo Obispo’s A Lab Story, Raynier Brizuela’s Boys at the Back, Catsi Catalan’s Fleeting, Joel Ferrer’s Road to Happy, and Mes de Guzman’s Sepak Takraw.

Meanwhile, the student short films to be showcased include Rafaela Abucejo’s “Saan Ako Pinaglihi?,” Alexa Moneii Agaloos’ “Ka Benjie,” Reutsche Colle Lima’s “Tiil ni Lola,” Marian Joyce Tiongzon’s “May Kulay Rosas ba sa Bahaghari?,” Kent Michael Cadungog’s “Text FIND DAD to 2366,” Joshua Andrey Doce’s “I am Mutya and I Thank You!,” Mark Terence Molave’s “Paano Po Gumawa ng College?,” Joanah Pearl Demonteverde’s “Kang Pagpuli Ko,” Alexandra Lapid’s “Queng Apag,” and Doxford Perlas’ “Naduea Eoman si Brownie.”

The selections of Puregold CinePanalo Choice Cuts encompass a wide variety of themes from indigenous culture and LGBTQ rights to mental health and preserving Philippine languages. The films also cover a wide variety of genres, from family dramas to coming-of-age stories to romance films. The eclectic mix of themes and genres means that, like the Puregold CinePanalo Film Festival from which these movies root, Choice Cuts has something for everyone.

Choice Cuts is also a collaboration between the Puregold CinePanalo Film Festival and EdukSine Studios, a DOST-funded social enterprise which supports independent films. The advocacy of EdukSine is what made the prospect of a Puregold CinePanalo Film Festival rewatch so appealing, given the CinePanalo’s purpose as a platform for independent filmmakers to make their dreams come true.

“We have a lot of gratitude towards EdukSine Studios and the UPFI for partnering with us for Choice Cuts,” adds Hayagan-Piedad. “Our goal with the CinePanalo has always been to further the development of Filipino filmmaking, and give underrepresented voices a platform. We’re so excited to be able to do it with two esteemed institutions that have the same purpose.”

Audience members can buy tickets to the event for P200 per full-length film or set of short films. Audience goers are encouraged to purchase their tickets early due to high demand. Screenings of Choice Cuts will begin at 11:30 in the morning, with screenings at 2:00 PM, 4:00PM, and 5:30 PM. Each screening will be at the UPFI Videotheque, except for the 4:00PM screening, which will be held at the Cine Adarna Theatre.
