ANC Kicks Off Year-Long Election Primer ‘Road to 2013′

ANC Kicks Off Year-Long Election Primer ‘Road to 2013′

A year before the 2013 polls, ANC, the ABS-CBN News Channel, embarks on a year-long primer that will present comprehensive analyses of sectors, personalities, and components critical to the upcoming elections in “ANC Presents: Road to 2013” anchored by veteran political reporter and news anchor Lynda Jumilla every Tuesday at 7 p.m.

Lynda, together with political scientists, experts, elections officials, and prominent politicians, will chart out the local political and electoral landscape in the coming months in the program, which started last March 27. Significant topics that were already discussed in the program were the implication of latest senatorial surveys, potential alliances and candidates, and lessons and problems from the first automated elections in 2010.

I hope to be able to give the viewers the same substantial political discussions and interviews they have come to expect from ANC, with a bit of my own perspective and insight thrown in,” Lynda said.

With more than a decade of broadcast journalism experience, Lynda has reported on the executive, legislative, and judicial branches of government for print, radio, and TV and also co-anchors ANC’s coverage of Chief Justice Renato Corona’s impeachment trial and Studio 23’s noontime newscast “Iba-Balita.”

Having covered the biggest and most controversial personalities and issues in the government, Lynda will try to challenge viewers’ own biases and preferences to become wiser voters by 2013.

The show delivers in-depth, extensive, and interactive discussions and interviews, but from time to time, I’ll try to drop bits and pieces of trivia, behind-the-scenes, and little-known facts on the goings-on in the political sphere,” she said.

On May 13, 2013, the country’s estimated 54 million voters will troop to polling precincts to cast their ballot in the midterm elections. What’s in store for the country’s second automated elections? And how is the senatorial race shaping up so far?

ANC, the country’s first and only 24/7 news channel, is known for breaking the biggest news as they happen and has been in the forefront of past election coverages, groundbreaking election specials, forums, and projects.

Catch “ANC Presents: Road to 2013” with Lynda Jumilla only on ANC (SkyCable Channel 27), 7 p.m. every Tuesday. For updates, follow @ANCALERTS (#Roadto2013) on Twitter or like ANC 24/7 on Facebook.

Pinoys Increasingly Rely on Social Media for News

Pinoys Increasingly Rely on Social Media for News

The emergence of the Philippines as one of the world's social media capitals —with one out of every three Filipinos on Facebook— has led to the widespread acceptance of social media as a key source of news and current information.

Earlier this year, social media came to the fore as the main channels of information concerning the magnitude 6.7 earthquake that hit Negros Island. And late last year, social media also proved crucial in reporting on, and finding help for, the victims of Typhoon Sendong in Mindanao.

“[Social media] are a direct connection to web users and TV viewers, and are an efficient avenue for gathering and delivering news. They are also platforms for receiving feedback and ideas about our programming,” says Howie Severino, Vice President for Multimedia Journalism of GMA Network.

The immediacy and impact of social media are such that they have been recognized by the Pulitzer Prize alongside traditional journalism stalwarts.

I think you’ll continue to see social media in the breaking news category, but it will show up in others as well,” said Pulitzer Prize administrator Sig Gissler of the growing number of prize-winning stories from social media.

Filipinos' own widespread adoption of social media for news consumption is reflected in the growing following accorded to the news accounts of the country's top broadcast networks.

GMA News, in particular, is the most-followed individual news account on Twitter and Facebook among local news broadcasters.

On social networking site Facebook, as of April 17, GMA News’ fan page had a total of 403,999 likes, while ABS-CBNNews.com had 223,510 and TV5’s JournalisMo posted 205,304.

Meanwhile, GMA News’ Twitter account, @GMANews, hit 726,855 followers as of April 17, while ABS-CBN News had 407,103. Meanwhile, ABS-CBN News Channel (ANC)’s Twitter account had a total following of 416,858 as of that time.

It is estimated that about 30% of Filipinos are active online, and according to a 2010 study by global digital marketing intelligence agency comScore, the Philippines scored the highest penetration of social media in the Asia-Pacific region, with more than 90 percent of its entire web population visiting a social networking site in February 2010.

GMA-7 Shows Win Medals and Finalist Certificates in 2012 New York Festivals

GMA-7 Shows Win Medals and Finalist Certificates in 2012 New York Festivals

GMA News and Public Affairs has bagged three Silver World Medals and six Finalist Certificates at the prestigious 2012 New York Festivals Television and Film Awards held on April 17 at the NAB Show in Las Vegas.

I-Witness’ "Lapnos" (Burn) episode won the Silver World Medal for the Social Issues and Current Events category, while GMA News TV’s Front Row brought home two Silver World Medals – one for the Social Issues category for its "Yaman sa Basura" (Child Urban Miners) episode and another one for the Biography/Profiles category for the documentary program’s "Bente Dos" (Twenty-Two) episode.

I-Witness’ "Lapnos" gives viewers a glimpse inside the burn unit of the Mindanao Burn Center in Davao City . Here, Peabody Award winner Jay Taruc learns about the victims’ individual – at times, harrowing – stories.

"We are honoured to receive this silver medal from the NYF. Lapnos was a heartbreaking yet powerful story that moved all of us who produced it. But what makes this story truly remarkable, apart from the recognition it recently received, is its power to raise awareness on this small, forgotten hospital in Mindanao . Even now, we continue to receive pledges for the hospital and its patients, and for this we are truly grateful. We dedicate this award to the burn victims who shared their story with us and hope that more can be done to alleviate their suffering," says Angeli Atienza, program manager for I-Witness’ Lapnos episode.

"This documentary was passionately executed by the men and women of I-Witness. We dedicate this award to our dear 12 year old Christy, who succumbed to complications from her burn wounds. God bless you and God bless Mindanao," adds Executive Producer Lea Llamoso.

Front Row’s "Yaman Sa Basura" tells the story of twin boys risking life and limb working in an urban mine in order to help their family. "Bente Dos" (Twenty-Two), on the other hand, narrates the life of a couple living in Manila ’s slums, together with their children - all 22 of them.

"GMA News TV is just a year old channel. With Front Row's two medals, we take so much pride and honor to receive more medals than any other Philippine network from the New York Festivals this year. Our local audience has embraced the non-traditional, no-host, no-voiceover documentary format and we are glad that jurors from international award-giving bodies have appreciated it as well," says Johnson Tam, Program Manager for Front Row.

Meanwhile, three GMA entries brought home Finalist Certificates including the I-Witness episode on compressor mining presented by Peabody award-winning journalist Kara David dubbed Gintong Putik; the GMA special that delved deep into the current situation of the country’s education system in Report Card; and Born To Be Wild’s The Born Expeditions Finale: The Monster of Mae Klong and The Great White Shark where, in the presence of a Philippine wildlife team, a world breakthrough in sting ray research was documented on video.

Leading Philippine news channel GMA News TV – only on its first year of airing but is already making its presence felt even in the international arena – also brought home three more Finalist Certificates: GMA News TV’s historical docudrama tracing the evolution of Dr. Jose Rizal’s writings, Pluma: Si Rizal, Ang Dakilang Manunulat (Rizal, The Great Writer); and two Reel Time episodes - Lusong and Tira. Lusong (Live to Dive) tells the story of a father and his son’s race to earn enough money through diving while Tira (Infected) narrates the alarming cases of young teens suffering from sexually transmitted diseases.

The New York Festival International Television and Film Awards is one of the world’s most prestigious award-giving bodies dedicated to both the television and film industries. It encourages next generation story-tellers to break new grounds by honouring the winners within each competition each year.

Luis Manzano Seals Deal with Housemates of ‘PBB Teen Edition 4′

Luis Manzano Seals Deal with Housemates of ‘PBB Teen Edition 4′

Actor-host and entrepreneur Luis Manzano made a special appearance in “Pinoy Big Brother Teen Edition 4” Monday night (April 16) to guide the teen housemates in launching a thriving business for their “Big Deal Task” this week.

Banker of the top-rating game show “Kapamilya Deal or No Deal” sent the host to the famous house where the ‘negosyanteens’ were tasked to start their own business with the Banker’s P10,000 capital.

Big Brother then challenged the teen housemates to conceptualize, produce, and sell a profitable product that will be sold to the public this week. Drawing insight from Luis’ advice, what product will the housemates come up with?

To segregate the housemates into two groups, Luis staged a “Deal” game with the teen housemates in which they got to play as ‘contestants’ like in the popular game show. However, instead of cash amounts, the briefcases contained two colors that represented the groups the housemates would be belonging to.

Meanwhile, fans of the program can have a peek into the minds of the teen housemates as they tweet about their experiences and thoughts using the hashtag #PBBTweets. Subscribe to their tweets straight from the famous PBB house on the program’s official account, @OfficialPBB4.

The teen housemates have also continued to capture the hearts of Filipino netizens as the reality show continues to dominate Twitter’s local and worldwide trending topics since its launch last week, with hashtags #PBBTeens4 and #UBER2012 and the names of the housemates constantly making it to the list every day. Supporters of the budding love teams Myrtle-Ryan and Karen-Kit, and housemates who utter quotable quotes such as Alec, Yves, Claire, and Clodet are also causing a stir on the micro-blogging site.

Watch “PBB Teen Edition 4” with Toni Gonzaga after “Dahil sa Pag-ibig” in Primetime Bida and “PBB Teen Edition 4 Uber 2012” hosted by Bianca, Robi, and John after “Kung Ako’y Iiwan Mo” in Kapamilya Gold, and “PBB Teen Edition 4 Updates” with Robi during “Kung Ako’y Iiwan Mo” and “Princess and I” on ABS-CBN. GMA Network President Gilberto Duavit Tells Manny V. Pangilinan ‘GMA-7 is Not for Sale’

GMA Network President Gilberto Duavit Tells Manny V. Pangilinan ‘GMA-7 is Not for Sale’

GMA Network President and Chief Operating Officer Gilberto R. Duavit, Jr. clarified certain points raised in a news article by Mary Ann Ll. Reyes published in the Philippine Star last April 14 headlined “MVP offers up to P45 B for GMA Network.”

Duavit said that it is not true that two out of the three major stockholders of GMA “are already amenable to selling their respective 33-percent stake.”

He added that the major and controlling shareholders have not yet received a price that is acceptable to them. “We are presently not in serious negotiations with the PLDT group as we have not yet received an offer price that is acceptable to us. The Network is not for sale but that is not to say it may not be sold, depending on the offer price,” Duavit reiterated.

Duavit also clarified that the sale of GMA to the PLDT group nearly occurred in 2001 with the signing of a Memorandum Of Understanding between the owners and the said group. He mentioned that there were agreements already reached then among the owners on both pricing and a sale of a majority stake, contrary to the news article. The transaction, however, did not materialize due to issues encountered by the buyer, and not because of a disagreement on the indicated P14 billion price.

ABS-CBN Nets P2.4 Billion in 2011

ABS-CBN Nets P2.4 Billion in 2011

The consolidated net income of ABS-CBN Corporation, the country’s largest multimedia conglomerate, registered P2.4 billion for the full year 2011.

ABS-CBN generated consolidated revenues of P28.2 billion from advertising and consumer sales, a 13% decline compared to 2010. Less the revenues from political advocacies and advertisements in 2010, consolidated revenues for 2011 declined by 4% year-on-year.

ABS-CBN’s advertising revenues reached P17.6 billion, a decline of 19% from a year ago. Minus the revenues from political advocacies and advertisements in 2010, advertising revenues declined by 6% year-on-year. This decrease is attributable to a slowdown in advertising spending by corporates.

Consumer sales for 2011 amounted to P10.6 billion, posting a 1% increase from a year ago. Sky Cable continues to contribute positively with revenues increasing by 10% to P4.3 billion. This is mostly driven by the increased take up of its broadband service subscriptions which increased by 18% year-on-year. However, ABS-CBN Global revenues declined by 8% year on year in peso terms due to the decline in subscribers and the appreciation of the Philippine peso against the US dollar. ABS-CBN Global’s overall viewer count was almost flat compared to the previous year. There was subscriber growth in Canada, Asia-Pacific and Australia, while there were declines in the Middle East, Europe, North America and Japan.

Total operating and other expenses dropped by P1.1 billion or 5% year-on-year to P22.3 billion. This was partly a result of lower cost of sales and services and general and administrative expenses (GAEX) as the company continued its effort to manage and control expenses. The decline in both expense accounts partly offset the increase in total production costs due to the Company’s drive to produce quality and innovative programs.

Net income attributable to shareholders is at P2.4 billion, aided by a gain on sale of Sky Cable Philippine Depositary Receipts (PDRs) to the Singaporean company, STT Communications Ltd. Meanwhile, earnings before interest, taxes, depreciation and amortization (EBITDA) hit P6.8 billion.

Capital expenditure and film and program rights acquisition for the year amounted to P4.2 billion, 14% higher than the level of spending from the previous year. Additional equipment was purchased to increase the company’s capacity to produce additional new programs.

ABS-CBN maintained its national audience share and ratings leadership with prime-time audience share averaging 43% , with a 13 percentage point lead over GMA’s, based on the Kantar National TV Ratings figure.

For the full year 2011, twenty one of the company’s shows were in the Top 20, with the following occupying the Top 18 slots: Emil Cruz Jr.’s Mara Clara, 100 Days to Heaven, PabloS. Gomez’s Mutya, Minsan Lang Kita Iibigin, Ikaw ay Pag-ibig, Budoy, Maalaala Mo Kaya…, Noah, Pilipinas Got Talent (Sun), TV Patrol, Guns and Roses, Pilipinas Got Talent (Sat), My Binondo Girl, Imortal, Rated K Handa Na Ba Kayo?,Junior Master Chef Pinoy Edition (Sat), Wansapanataym, Nasaan Ka Elisa?, and Maria La Del Barrio

ABS-CBN Film Productions, Inc. released sixteen films in 2011. Five of them–Ang Tanging Ina Mo Last Na To, Dalaw, Catch Me I’m in Love, In The Name of Love, No Other Woman and Praybeyt Benjamin–topped P100 million in box office receipts, earning blockbuster status by local standards. No Other Woman, a co-production with Viva Films, grossed P282 million, while Praybeyt Benjamin, also a co-production with Viva, grossed P342 million.

Kapuso Stars Kyla, Steven Silva, Sarah Lahbati Receive Warm Welcome in Bacolod's Panaad Festival

Kapuso Stars Kyla, Steven Silva, Sarah Lahbati Receive Warm Welcome in Bacolod's Panaad Festival

An estimated crowd of 15,000 Negrenses were treated to an exciting Kapuso experience via the Panaad Festival: Kapuso Night held recently at the Panaad Park and Stadium in Bacolod City.

Featuring topnotch performances from RnB Princess Kyla and Steven Silva of Party Pilipinas, and Kapuso leading lady Sarah Lahbati (from the upcoming Kapuso primetime offering Makapiling Kang Muli), the event served as the highlight of the Kapuso Network’s participation in this year’s Panaad Festival.

Steven and Sarah, who are both products of GMA’s popular talent reality search Starstruck, surprised the audience with a special duet number. The sizeable crowd went agog as the two artists fueled the “kilig explosion” with their seemingly good rapport.

The excitement reached fever pitch as soon as Kyla took the stage. And the RnB Princess did not disappoint with her impressive song numbers. She also participated in the Kapuso Meet and Greet in SM City Bacolod at 4pm that day.

I feel very touched by the warm welcome extended to us by the Negrenses. It was nice to see them dancing and singing along during my performances. Nakakatuwa sila!” shares Kyla.

It’s my third time here in Bacolod and it feels good to be here again to entertain our Kapuso fans. I hope they’ll continue to support all our shows on GMA. Sana abangan din nila ang mga bago naming programa,” says Sarah.

Steven is also excited about joining the Panaad festivities. “Ang daming tao! I hope they enjoyed celebrating the festival with us and I definitely look forward to seeing them again in our next visit.

Meanwhile, RnB Prince Jay-R of Party Pilipinas and Kapuso heartthrob TJ Trinidad (Makapiling Kang Muli) serenaded the candidates of the “Lin-ay Sang Negros” beauty pageant during its Coronation Night last April 13 at the Panaad Park and Stadium. TJ, together with Bubble Gang's sexy actress Jackie Rice, took centerstage in another fun and exciting Meet and Greet that took place the following day at SM City Bacolod.

The team behind GMA Regional TV was just ecstatic not just with the successful outcome of the events but also with the warm reception they received from the local audience.

By just merely seeing all the smiles in the audience's faces, we know for a fact that all of our hard work and preparations for this year's Panaad Festival surely paid off. We thank all Kapusong Negrenses for welcoming us once again and for continuously making GMA Network number one in their hearts,” says Oliver Amoroso, Assistant Vice President for Sales and Marketing of GMA Regional TV.

On April 29, catch the highlights of the Kapuso celebration of the Panaad Festival via the "Let’s Fiesta" TV Special airing in all eight (8) regional stations of GMA Network in Davao, CDO, GenSan, Dagupan, Cebu, Iloilo, Naga, and Bacolod.
