Josh Hartnett's Amazing Performance in M. Night Shyamalan's Movie "Trap"

Trap,” the latest thriller from the brilliant mind of director M. Night Shyamalan, tells the story of a father and daughter who attend a pop concert where they realize they’re at the center of a dark and sinister event. How did this thriller about a serial killer trapped in a concert venue begin?

“‘Trap’ was created by me and my daughter Saleka from our conversations together about music and movies,” Shyamalan proudly shares. Saleka, who plays Lady Raven in the film, also wrote the fictional artist’s songs featured in the concert.

Saleka, a professional singer-songwriter, says that her dad’s passion for filmmaking is one of the purest things she’s ever seen anyone have a passion for. “What’s interesting to me is that he tells such dark stories, because I think he is such a positive person,” she says. “You see that positivity in the context of these dark situations, and you know that he thinks the universe is good. It’s a key throughline in a lot of his movies. And I think this is another example of that. It’s beautiful to watch. That makes me feel safe on set, and it makes a lot of people feel happy and joyous to be here. It’s like we’re living the dream. He feels that and so we remember that every day.

Josh Hartnett, who plays Cooper, also has great respect for Shyamalan, especially because of the way the director works. “I was given a big ream of the storyboards, which is basically the film,” shares Hartnett. “You could flip through it and you could see every shot… for someone to come that prepared and then show up and actually live within it… I think he does that because he feels what the actors are going through. You can see him behind the camera, really experiencing it, wanting to be there 100%, to see how it will be experienced by the audience. Later, he can then put it together in a way that’s going to be most effective for the audience. It just shows what a master he is of this craft. And I think because of all that, he really enjoys the process.”

Shyamalan is also all praises of Hartnett. For the role of Cooper, Shyamalan wanted an actor who is a big risk taker. “When I met Josh, he looked me in the eye, and I just knew he was ready to do anything – there was an energy, an electricity coming off of him,” says the director. “I think for audiences, one of the great reasons to come to this movie is seeing the amazing performance that Josh gives.”

“Trap,” distributed in the Philippines by Warner Bros. Pictures, a Warner Bros. Discovery company, opens in cinemas July 31.

Puregold CinePanalo Film Festival Year 2 Launches, Higher Production Grants for Seven Full-Length and 25 Student Filmmakers Up for Grabs

The journey to the second year of Puregold CinePanalo Film Festival is finally underway, with its introductory press conference held last July 23 at the Gateway Cineplex 18. A sequel to last year’s historic debut Puregold CinePanalo, this year’s iteration promises to give filmmakers across the country more opportunities to showcase their skill, creativity, and dedication to their craft.

Puregold is treating the success of the festival's inaugural run as a launching pad for something even bigger. This year’s version of the Puregold CinePanalo has up for grabs an increased funding pool for selected filmmakers, with seven full-length directors set to receive a production grant worth three million pesos (PHP3,000,000.00), while twenty-five selected student short film directors will receive a production grant worth one hundred and fifty thousand pesos (P150,000.00). Seven full-length film grants are to be given this time around, surpassing last year’s six.

Emphasized at the press conference was that, as in the previous year, this year’s Puregold CinePanalo seeks film entries that showcase the indomitable spirit of the Filipino through uplifting and inspiring “panalo stories.” The press conference also sent out reminders that those who believe they have what it takes have to submit a complete screenplay among other requirements by either July 30 for full-length films or August 15 for student shorts.

To encourage aspiring filmmakers to join the Puregold CinePanalo Film Festival, a slew of directors from last year’s event joined the press conference to share their experiences creating their selected features. Present at the launch was Always Panalo Film awardee Carlo Obispo. Best Picture winner Kurt Soberano, of the recently re- screened Under A Piaya Moon, also sent a special video message to encourage filmmakers to submit their panalo stories for submission.

In addition to the messages from the full-length directors, five student directors also offered messages at the event in order to demonstrate the kinds of experiences and opportunities Puregold CinePanalo can bring young aspiring filmmakers. In attendance were Always Panalo Film awardee Jenievive Adame, Best Director winner Dizelle Masilungan, and regional filmmakers Marian Jayce Tiongzon and Joanah Demonteverde.

The event was also opened by Puregold’s Senior Marketing Manager Ivy Piedad, who delivered an emphatic statement on the importance of rewarding Filipino artistry and celebrating the spirit of Kwentong Panalo ng Buhay. She also noted that Puregold CinePanalo’s mandate found it especially important to give opportunities to student filmmakers who may not have the same access to filmmaking resources as established directors do.

When we first launched Puregold CinePanalo, we envisioned it to champion Filipino stories, advocate for student filmmakers by providing them with a platform for their dream short films, and elevate the local film scene,” said Piedad.

Piedad noted how the previous iteration of the Puregold CinePanalo was instrumental in bringing to light the talents of several young, aspiring filmmakers, some of whom have used the momentum from the competition to further fuel their artistic dreams.

We saw the birth of promising talents, with several inspiring stories that came to life on the big screen. Fueled by last edition’s success, here we are once again!” continued Piedad, “Back and bigger than ever, ready to celebrate another year of incredible films and mark the second chapter of Puregold CinePnalo.”

All interested filmmakers are once again encouraged to read through all the mechanics of the 2025 Puregold CinePanalo Festival which are publicly available on Puregold’s official social media accounts.

Upon perusing through the mechanics, aspiring contestants may then proceed to submit their official applications at https://forms.gle/wNUUQ62okYcyW5r37.

For those looking to learn more, inquiries may be sent to thesecretariat@cinepanalo.com.

Philpop Himig Handog 2024 Songwriting Festival Releases Top 12 Songs

The Philpop Himig Handog songwriting festival, the biggest collaboration in music, has released the Top 12 songs that represent today’s OPM and echo this generation’s woes, feelings, and hopes.

The Top 12 entries include:

“ATM” by Francis Contemplacion
“Buhi” by Keith John Quito
”Dili Na Lang” by Relden Campanilla
“Ghostwriter” by Kevin Yadao
“Kurba” by Alvin Serito
“Langit Lupa” by Geca Morales
“MHWG” by Rob Angeles
“Papahiram” by Rinz Ruiz
“Salamat (Nga Wala Na Ta)” by Jimmy Ricks
“Taliwala” by Maric Gavino
 “Tulala” by Shantel Cyline Lapatha
“Wag Paglaruan” by Tiara Shaye

Laguna native Francis composed “ATM,” short for Ang Tanging Mamahalin, to honor his wife and depict all the ways he loves her inspired by Gary Chapman’s “Five Love Languages.” Ice Seguerra serves as the song interpreter.

Keith’s “Buhi” signifies the title’s dual meaning in Bisaya, ‘letting go’ and ‘being alive.’ The moving-on song after a failed relationship is interpreted by indie-folk singer-songwriter Ferdinand Aragon.

Relden captures the simple explanation that “love is beautiful but also hard and if it isn’t with you, then I don’t want it” in “Dili Na Lang” interpreted by her fellow Cebuana artist Jolianne.

Kevin chronicles the feelings of being ghosted while seeking a valid and acceptable reason in “Ghostwriter” performed by “Idol Philippines” season 2 grand winner KHIMO.

Sunkissed Lola’s frontman Alvin expresses the magical feeling of falling in love no matter how cruel the world can be in “Kurba” interpreted by this year’s breakthrough OPM artist Maki.

Geca wrote “Langit Lupa” based on the running-around game of the same name. She is also the song interpreter alongside “Tawag ng Tanghalan” season 6 champion Lyka Estrella and “Idol Philippines” season 2 contestant Annrain.

Rob’s “MHWG” is short for ‘mahiwaga’ and is a song about hope and encouragement, reminding listeners not to rush through life and instead welcome unexpected and wonderful opportunities. Rising P-pop group VXON performs the song.

Rinz’s “Papahiram” is about real love that sees and accepts both the good and the bad. It is interpreted by OPM hitmaker Moira featuring indie musician Johnnoy Danao.

Salamat (Nga Wala Na Ta)” is an anthem of personal growth and healing along with its themes of gratitude and self-discovery it brings, written by Jimmy and interpreted by Kurt Fick.

Inspired by a real-life story, Maric’s “Taliwala” encourages staying committed despite the challenges of fading love. It is interpreted by Noah Alejandre, a member of the singing duo from Ormoc, reon.

Shantel’s upbeat composition “Tulala” is about a girl who instantly gets drawn to an attractive stranger despite her fear of falling in love. Shantel, a native of Bacolod City, performs the song with jazz, funk, and soul band Extrapolation.

The electro-pop song “Wag Paglaruan” showcases Tiara’s upbeat and multi-layered writing, diving into the wariness of being emotionally played by someone manipulative. FANA’s vibrant vocals complement the song, which also features Tiara herself.

Philpop Himig Handog is an initiative of the Philpop Musicfest Foundation and Himig Handog, which began with a mentorship program that included workshops and songwriting sessions for budding Filipino composers from all over the country.

The Top 12 entries will vie to become this year’s best compositions. The winners will receive cash prizes amounting to PHP 1,000,000 (1st place); PHP 500,000 (2nd place); and PHP 200,000 (3rd place).

Sky Cable Partners with Converge to Deliver Faster, Reliable, Superior Internet Service

Sky Cable Corporation will bring faster, superior, and more reliable internet service to new and existing Sky Fiber subscribers by utilizing the pure fiber network of Converge Information and Communications Technology Solutions, Inc.

Sky Cable Corp. has entered into a commercial arrangement with leading Philippine fiber broadband provider Converge Information and Communications Technology Solutions, Inc. that will enable Sky to upgrade its network and improve services to its subscribers.

Sky Chairman Mark Lopez said, “Converge has built a superior state of the art fiber network nationwide that Sky customers will soon experience."

Sky President and Chief Operations Officer Claudia Suarez said the initiative with Converge supports Sky’s transformation plan that is aimed at improving Sky’s products and services. “Through the arrangement with Converge, we expect Sky and its subscribers to benefit from the world-class fiber network that Converge has built over the last few years,” she said.

Converge President and Co-Founder Maria Grace Uy said that the arrangement will allow Converge to maximize its network and increase port utilization. “This will be a revenue boost for Converge consistent with similar arrangements with other players as we are able to continue to monetize further our excess network capacity,” she said.

Converge has the largest fiber-to-the-home (FTTH) network in the Philippines with over eight million ports and a fiber footprint extending over 700,000 kilometers that reaches 16 million Filipino homes nationwide. As of end-March 2024, Converge serves 2.3 million residential broadband subscribers across the country.

As everyone knows, the first business that I built on my own was in cable television and with the increasing availability of fiber technology in the early 2000s outside the Philippines, my wife Grace and I decided to enter the fixed broadband business. So, I’m really excited that we are able to help Sky, the leader in the cable business, in its own transformation program by providing them the latest optical fiber technology,” said Converge CEO and Co-Founder Dennis Anthony Uy.

Converge Chief Operations Officer Jesus Romero commented that: “We are confident that Sky subscribers will have a better experience with faster broadband speeds with fiber connectivity”.

Carlo Katigbak, president and CEO of ABS-CBN and concurrently a Sky director, expressed confidence that the initiative with Converge will bring positive benefits to Sky subscribers. “We believe that this is the best way to move forward and stay focused on delivering superior customer experience,” he said.

Aside from the network upgrade, the Sky transformation program also calls for increased operational efficiency, greater financial discipline, and organizational improvements.

We hope to replicate this business model and encourage other players to do the same. This is really all part of the mission of Converge to bring world-class connectivity to all Filipinos and leave no one behind in this digital age,” Uy concluded.
