"The X Factor Philippines" Final 6 Reveal Their Lifelong Struggles

"The X Factor Philippines" Final 6 Reveal Their Lifelong Struggles

For the final six, being the next multimedia superstar and winning “The X Factor Philippines” are not just a battle of charisma, stage presence, and unique vocal prowess but also a personal battle to overcome their lifelong struggles that might have driven them off course from realizing their dreams of making it in the music industry.

Jeric Medina
from Paranaque has been battling weight problems since he was a kid. He may be living a privileged life but he grew up insecure about his physique. This drove him to commit to losing weight through exercise and diet and eventually lost more than 70 lbs. With his new figure, he was more confident to pursue his longtime dream of becoming a music artist.

His teammate Gabriel Maturan of Dapitan City is fighting a different battle in his life as he has long struggled to have a complete family. Growing up, Gabriel has had three men he considered fathers, one of whom was a Danish national. That was why he lived and became a working student in Denmark. When his mom and his second stepfather parted ways, they returned to the country and lived in Zamboanga Del Norte, where he found his third dad. Will he make his fathers proud by becoming the grand winner?

Kedebon Colim
of Cebu faces a tough battle in the competition. Aside from struggling with poverty, Kedebon is also in a constant battle to prove himself to the viewing public that he deserves to be in the final six. Despite the insults thrown at him, Kedebon respects people’s opinions and just does his best every week. This is no surprise to his family and friends because Kedebon has always been strong and hardworking. In fact, he even worked as an internet café attendant and construction worker at the same time just to help in his family’s finances.

Just like Kedebon, Allen Sta. Maria is also fighting poverty. The youngest finalist from Nueva Ecija would join various amateur singing contests and get gigs as a singer to support her studies and buy stuff for herself like clothes and shoes. Allen never became champion in the many singing contests she joined. Will her fate change in “The X Factor Philippines?”

KZ Tandingan
of Digos City is determined to win the competition. KZ has always loved singing so much that she would belt out songs just about everywhere. Unfortunately, she encountered throat problems that affected her singing voice. She can no longer belt out high notes like before and thus suffered from low self-esteem. But with the help of her family, she was able to find her love for music once more and searched for a unique singing style with her band. Now that she is in the “X Factor,” KZ is ready to give it all to prove that the country’s music industry is not just for belters and smooth-skinned, pretty artists.

Carrying the banner of the Groups category is all-male group Daddy’s Home composed of Allan Silonga, Herbert Silonga, Eric Dacanay, and Jerome Icatar. All professionals and aged above 31, Daddy’s Home is in a fight against time as their shot at making it in the industry tends to be shorter than the rest of the younger contenders. Aside from the competition, they also face conflicting priorities since they have families to provide for. Making it this far, Daddy’s Home threats their families as inspiration to win the competition and finally achieve their goal of penetrating the mainstream scene.

Martin Nievera mentors Jeric, Gabriel, and Kedebon; Charice mentors KZ Tandingan and Allen Sta. Maria; and Gary Valenciano mentors Daddy’s Home. Fourth judge-mentor Pilita Corrales’ mentees were unfortunately eliminated from the competition and didn’t make it to the final six. Who among them will become the country’s next big multimedia superstar? Whose ‘x factor’ will win over viewers and judge-mentors hearts?

Be sure to save your favorites from elimination. Vote after their performances by every Saturday by texting XFJERIC/GAB/KED/ALLEN/KZ/DAD and send it to 2331 for Globe and Sun subscribers and 231 for Smart and Talk ‘n Text subscribers.

Don’t miss the country’s biggest and grandest musical event of the year, “The X Factor Philippines,” with KC Concepcion as host, airing every Saturday, after “MMK,” and every Sunday, after “Sarah G Live” on ABS-CBN. "Pepito Manaloto: Ang Tunay Na Kuwento" Premieres this Sunday

"Pepito Manaloto: Ang Tunay Na Kuwento" Premieres this Sunday

The sequel of the reality-sitcom "Pepito Manaloto" will air its pilot episode on Sunday night, September 16 on GMA-7.

"Pepito Manaloto: Ang Tunay na Kuwento" picks up from that point in the first season's story wherein the lead character Pepito (portrayed by Michael V) wins the jackpot in a lottery. After his luck changed his and his family's life from rags to riches, a television network executive approaches Pepito and comes up with the idea of retelling their story in a TV series. However, Pepito won't like the treatment of the TV show. He thinks that much of the story has been played up or exaggerated. He wanted a more realistic portrayal of his family's story. The TV executive will draw up an alternative proposal: the TV show will be redone but this time, it will be a reality show. The cameras will be documenting Pepito and his family's every day life.

The "reality show" treatment of the new season of Pepito Manaloto is what sets it apart from the previous one, which was basically more of a situation comedy (SitCom). As Michael V himself describes it, Pepito Manaloto: Ang Tunay na Kuwento is a "real-life documentary of a fictional family."

The show also stars Manilyn Reynes as Elsa Manaloto, Angel Satsumi as Clarissa Manaloto and Jake Vargas as Chito Manaloto.
Playing equally important roles are John Feir as Patrick, Ronnie Henares as Tommy, Mosang as Baby, Janna Dominguez as Maria, and Arthur Solinap as Robert. Completing the cast are the new characters who will make the lives of the Manaloto family more interesting - Jessa Zaragoza as Deedee and Nova Villa as Mimi.

Design and Build

Apple's aluminum-and-glass iPhone 5 retains its super-industrial aesthetic, metal buttons and all. Its new, all-metal backing could look slightly less luxe than the iPhone 4S', but it will survive far more drops.

Then you have the Nokia Lumia 920, whose yellow, red, white, black, or gray polycarbonate body and rounded edges produce a punch of pop sensibility in an otherwise staid design world. It's a good look for the phone, and a smart one that really helps Nokia stand out; however, distinctiveness and the nevertheless plastic body aren't everyone's cup of tea.

We find the GS3's design appealing, but shiny, glossy plastic doesn't scream "quality." That isn't to say that the GS3 is more prone to breaking or shattering than the other two; in fact, plastic has the benefit of scuffing rather than shattering. However, we do really love the GS3's in-hand feel, which is comfortable despite its much larger size.

Screen Size and Clarity

The iPhone 5's 1136x640 pixels on its 4-inch screen still yields 326 pixels per inch and gives the phone a 16:9 aspect ratio, wider than the iPhone 4S. However, Apple boasts that its sRGB display delivers 44 percent more color saturation and cuts down on glare.

Samsung's Galaxy S3 has the largest screen of the three, an 4.8-inch HD Super AMOLED, which yields a 1,280x720-pixel resolution and a pixel density of 306 pixels per inch. Its size offers the most expansive real estate for watching videos, reading, and composing messages, but there are three minor drawbacks: the lowest pixel density of the trio, high reflection, and a dimmer maximum brightness than the iPhone 4S and the HTC One X.

Nokia has also brought its ClearBlack Display filter to the Lumia 920; it definitely cut down glare on the Lumia 900, and Nokia claims that this version is even better.

Camera Prowess

This is a tough call since all three phones bring their A-game here. The iPhone has set the benchmark in terms of camera phone performance for quite a while and the improvements to the iPhone 5's imaging system will no doubt cement its lead. These include improved low-light performance and a new panorama shooting mode that catches up to Android.

Of course Android devices in many cases surpass the iPhone. Samsung's Galaxy S3 has a sensor that offers the same 8-megapixel resolution as the iPhone 5, plus it features tons of fancy shooting modes like panorama and multishot burst mode.

The Nokia Lumia 920 is the real dark horse in the smartphone camera phone arms race. On paper, its 8.7-megapixel camera and PureView technology promise better performance than both the iPhone and Galaxy S3. It also will be able to run special apps within the camera application itself, allowing you to upgrade its functionality greatly over time - at least that's the theory.

LTE and Network Promise

A this point, LTE on the iPhone 5 was an inevitability, and a feature that's been in the hopper for some time. Verizon has already sworn that all its new smartphones will have LTE, and AT&T and Sprint are expanding their respective networks.

Battery Life

Nokia plans to equip its Lumia 920 with a 2,000 mAh battery, which should provide a good amount of run time, especially considering that Windows Phone has traditionally been a very economical operating system. Meanwhile, the Samsung Galaxy S3 comes with a slightly larger 2,100 mAh battery that lasted for well over 9 hours playing video. Apple is coy on the iPhone 5's capacity, but promises that its will offer 10 hours of video playback and 8 hours of Web surfing over LTE.

Of course, if you're constantly using battery-draining features like S-Voice on the Galaxy S3, or streaming video, no phone will last as long as you'd like.

NFC

Apple's iPhone 5 needed a few features to shore up some weak spots: a larger screen, LTE, and, to a lesser extent, NFC. It got the first two, but Apple didn't mention anything about NFC for the iPhone 5.

NFC, which makes it possible to share content across phones and pay for purchases, might not be a big deal to you, but it is an entire category of software capability that's closed on the iPhone 5.

Voice Assistant

Siri in the iPhone 4S and Google's Voice Actions are evenly matched, but Samsung is standing behind its own S Voice assistant, which falls far behind.

Nokia phones stick with Microsoft's integrated, much more subtle voice command software, TellMe, but in Windows Phone 8, Microsoft will let third-party app-makers work in their own commands, so you can bark at individual apps like Audible, to read aloud, pause, or stop.
