Puregold CinePanalo 2025: Bigger Dreams, Bolder Visions Showing at Gateway Cineplex from March 14 to 25

Filmmakers who are set to participate at the upcoming 2025 Puregold CinePanalo Film Festival were recently presented in a press conference held at the Artson Events Place in Quezon City. With a fresh group of contenders and their entries riding on the momentum of last year’s hugely successful festival, Puregold CinePanalo is fast turning out to be a hotly anticipated event in the local film industry’s calendar.

Millions of pesos in production grants are a great part of the draw. In Puregold CinePanalo’s 2025 run, the bounty benefitted eight winning filmmakers who received P3,000,000 each, as well as twenty-four student filmmakers who received P150,000 each.

With Puregold CinePanalo once again raring to provide millions in production grants to select participants, aspiring new filmmakers were spurred to craft more uplifting stories with the theme, “Mga Kwentong Panalo ng Buhay”.

At the press conference, Puregold CinePanalo proudly presented these worthy participants to attendees that comprised festival organizers as well as representatives from the festival’s various partners such as the MTRCB, Gateway Cineplex 18, Mowelfund, Terminal Six, CMB Films, and MFP Rentals.

DigiPlus and BingoPlus Foundation Launch "Pusta de Peligro" Short Films, a Call for Responsible Gaming

DigiPlus Interactive and its social development arm, BingoPlus Foundation, have officially launched the Pusta de Peligro Responsible Gaming campaign with the premiere of three compelling short films. Held at Gateway Cinema, the event highlighted DigiPlus’ steadfast commitment to responsible gaming, advocating for prevention, education, and intervention to ensure that gaming remains a safe and enjoyable form of entertainment.

At the heart of the campaign are three resonant short films, each designed to evoke self-reflection and inspire mindful gaming choices.

The first video tells the story of a woman torn between breaking her piggy bank to place a bet, or keeping her hard-earned money.

The second video follows someone caught in a tough decision: to use his money to buy lunch, or risk it all for a bet.

The third video highlights the struggle of a woman with worn-out shoes, torn between buying a much-needed replacement, or taking a chance on a game.

Through these relatable, real-life scenarios, Pusta de Peligro challenges viewers to recognize the moments when gaming transitions from fun to risk, and encourages them to embrace the campaign’s call: “Pag Pusta de Peligro na, pause na muna, dahil ang gaming dapat fun-fun lang!”

Introducing responsible gaming features in DigiPlus platforms

As the company behind leading brands BingoPlus, ArenaPlus, and GameZone, DigiPlus has raised the bar for responsible gaming by integrating self-exclusion features in its platforms. These provide players with tools that enable them to take control of their gaming habits, including options to set daily gaming durations, customize specific gaming schedules, and establish daily loss limits. For instance, players can confine their gaming to specific hours, such as evenings or lunch breaks, and set loss limits that ensure they never risk more than they are comfortable with.

These self-defined tools reflect DigiPlus’ proactive commitment to player welfare and align with global standards for responsible gaming. By integrating these features directly into its platforms, DigiPlus empowers players to enjoy gaming safely, without stress or financial strain.

“We hope this campaign will spark a national conversation about responsible gaming,” said DigiPlus Chairman Eusebio Tanco. “We want players to feel empowered to make wise choices, families to feel reassured, and communities to see gaming as a safe form of entertainment. The Pusta de Peligro campaign is a crucial step toward that vision.”

Conversations with experts

The Pusta de Peligro campaign represents a year-long journey of dedication and collaboration. DigiPlus has invested significantly in crafting an advocacy that goes beyond words – partnering with mental health professionals, financial coaches, and educators to create a campaign that speaks to the realities of Filipino players.

A highlight of the premiere was a thought-provoking discussion featuring Teresita Castillo of the International Gambling Counselors Certification Board and financial coach Armand Bengco. The panel explored the importance of education, early intervention, and expert collaboration in fostering a safe and responsible gaming culture.

Pusta de Peligro builds on DigiPlus and BingoPlus Foundation’s longstanding commitment to responsible gaming. Previous initiatives, such as the Tamang Laro, Tamang Panalo webinar series and financial coaching programs for jackpot winners, have paved the way for this latest campaign to engage players more deeply and meaningfully.

Looking ahead

DigiPlus and BingoPlus Foundation are taking the campaign to new heights, rolling out the videos across digital platforms and inviting communities to share the message of responsible gaming. In addition to digital advocacy, on-ground initiatives such as community workshops and live events are set to amplify the campaign’s reach, ensuring that more players are empowered to make balanced, mindful decisions.

“We’re just getting started,” Tanco said. “Responsible gaming is the foundation of a sustainable gaming industry. With Pusta de Peligro, we’re proving that advocacy and innovation can go hand in hand to create a safer, more enjoyable gaming environment for all.”

“Time To Dance” Highlights Touching Stories and Plights of Filipino Dancers

ABS-CBN and Nathan Studios’ new dance survival reality show “Time To Dance” turned its spotlight to seven hopefuls from different local dance communities, who shared their stories and struggles during the show’s pilot episode last Saturday (January 18).

During the show’s mediacon, New Gen Dance Champ Gela Atayde shared how she wants to shed light to the realities of being a Filipino dancer.

“Here in “Time To Dance” I want to inspire kasi I had dance teammates who weren’t financially stable. That was when the realization hit me that I want to be able to help because I am privileged enough,” she said.

Meanwhile, World of Dance Philippines director Vimi Rivera emphasized how “Time To Dance” strives to showcase the Filipino dance community.

“It’s not just a dance competition or a survival show na ang focus ay kung sino ang pinakamagaling. We’re trying our best to showcase the whole dance community para makita rin ng general public kung gaano kataas ‘yung art form and the hours that we give to improve our skills,” Coach Vimi said.

The pilot episode showed dance council members World of Dance PH finalist Ken San Jose and celebrity choreographer Jobel Dayrit tearing up as one of the dance hopefuls, Marlon, expressed how he struggled to earn money through dancing in order to buy medicine for his father.

“My father got diagnosed with cancer. I came here to the Philippines to take care of him as well. I remember fighting for my life din on that stage just like what you did. You’re not alone, you give me hope,” Ken said to Marlon.

“Time To Dance” host Robi Domingo turned emotional as dance hopeful and breadwinner Ron shared how he juggles between being a dancer, a family man, and a small business owner. Robi shared that he hopes to be responsible like Ron once he becomes a father.

Another dance hopeful, Paulo, shared how he stopped dancing because of his brother’s death and how he wishes to earn money so that he can go back to school. Young dancers Ice, Cheva, and Alex expressed the challenges they face in finding balance between studying and dancing, while Cherry aired how she navigates life independently after leaving her family who doesn’t support her passion.

After performing 1-minute dance routines, six dance hopefuls Ice, Cherry, Paulo, Alex, Ron, and Marlon advanced to the next round and became part of the 12 official dance contenders, who will undergo intensive training with Gela and champion dance coaches and battle it out in challenges in the coming weeks.

Next week, find out who among the next 10 hopefuls will advance to the next round and complete the 12 official dance contenders. Catch the newest dance survival reality show “Time To Dance” every Saturday, 8:30 pm on A2Z, Kapamilya Channel, Kapamilya Online Live, MYX, and TFC.

TBA Studios Officially Begins Production on Historical Film ‘Quezon’

TBA Studios has announced that its highly-anticipated biographical historical movie “Quezon” is set for production this year with a target theatrical release later this year.

“Quezon” marks the continuation of TBA Studios’ cinematic “Bayaniverse” - a series of films based on Philippine history that includes box office hits “Heneral Luna” and “Goyo: Ang Batang Heneral.” It is also the company’s first major film production since 2020, after bringing award-winning international films such as the Academy Award-winning “Everything, Everywhere All At Once” and “Past Lives”, and the Dolly de Leon-starrer “Triangle of Sadness” to Philippine theaters as a distributor.

Filming for “Quezon” is set to start in March 2025.

The movie is expected to follow the life of Manuel L. Quezon, a Filipino lawyer and soldier who became the President of the Commonwealth of the Philippines from 1935 to 1944, highlighting his tumultuous presidential campaign against then-President Emilio Aguinaldo.

According to TBA Studios President and COO Daphne Chiu, “Quezon” will be released both locally and worldwide. She added that the film will be produced as a stand-alone - a movie that exists within the same cinematic continuity of TBA Studios’ beloved historical films “Heneral Luna" and “Goyo: Ang Batang Heneral”, but will be made accessible to moviegoers who have not seen the earlier films.

Jerrold Tarog, the director and co-writer of “Heneral Luna” and “Goyo: Ang Batang Heneral,” is set to return to helm “Quezon.”

The film is supported by the Philippine government agency National Commission for Culture and the Arts (NCCA) and the Film Development Council of the Philippines (FDCP), the latter announcing last year a funding support for the movie. This landmark partnership signals a shared goal between TBA Studios, NCCA, and FDCP to further strengthen the local film industry by delivering and promoting world-class films.

Casting for the movie’s major and supporting roles is currently underway and will be announced soon. Chiu teases that the cast will feature names that will surprise and excite audiences and hardcore fans of the Bayaniverse alike.

TBA Studios made its mark in the Philippine film industry with the box-office and critical success of “Quezon’s” historical film predecessors - with “Heneral Luna” earning the title as the Philippines’ highest-grossing historical film of all time during its record-breaking theatrical run in 2015 and the Philippines’ official entry for Best Foreign Language Film at the 88th Academy Awards.

“It's the best cast imaginable,” Says Director Jeff Fowler of the Cast of “Sonic The Hedgehog 3,” Showing January 15 in PH Cinemas

Sonic the Hedgehog 3, which sees Team Sonic on a brand new adventure, welcomes back the franchise’s all-star cast, plus a few new additions.

“We could not be more excited,” says director Jeff Fowler. “We’ve got Ben Schwartz back voicing Sonic; Colleen O’Shaughnessey as Tails; Idris Elba as Knuckles; James Marsden as the Donut Lord – aka Sheriff Tom Wachowski – Tika Sumpter as Maddie Wachowski; and the incomparable Jim Carrey in not just one, but two key roles. Robotnik’s henchman Agent Stone is once again played by Lee Majdoub. Natasha Rothwell and Shemar Moore have cameos as newlyweds Rachel and Randall. Adam Pally drops in as everybody’s favorite goofy Deputy Wade. And last but not least, our new character, Shadow the Hedgehog, is played by Keanu Reeves. It’s the best cast imaginable.”

In Sonic the Hedgehog 3, Sonic, Knuckles and Tails reunite against a powerful new adversary, Shadow, a mysterious villain with powers unlike anything they have faced before. With their abilities outmatched in every way, Team Sonic must seek out an unlikely alliance in hopes of stopping Shadow and protecting the planet.

Knuckles (Idris Elba), Sonic (Ben Schwartz) and Tails (Colleen O’Shaughnessey) in #SonicMovie3

In Ben Schwartz’s imaginative hands, Sonic is a flurry of manic energy and goofy humor. “Making people laugh is a beautiful feeling,” says Schwartz. “I spend a lot of my life making thousands of people laugh together and it’s one of my favorite things in the universe. Being able to do that for kids as Sonic sends me over the moon.”

Anyone who likes the earlier films will love this one, promises Schwartz. “We’ve exploded the boundaries,” he says. “There are fights in outer space. There are two different Robotniks. The ultimate life form will destroy the world if the team of Knuckles, Tails and Sonic can’t stop him. This is Sonic’s toughest fight yet and he gets knocked on his butt a couple of times, but he comes back hard.”

Idris Elba, who voices Knuckles, loves the fact that Sonic’s world runs on pure imagination. “We all know hedgehogs don’t move fast. And they’re not blue. But no matter what age you are, this is an experience you don’t want to miss. And make sure you share it - it’s definitely a movie for everyone.”

Colleen O’Shaughnessey, who voices the brainy fox Tails, has been involved in the Sonic world since the early games, and knows Tails inside out. “The love that I’ve gotten playing this character has just been tremendous,” she says. “Sonic fans are some of the most passionate fans in the world. And they’re very opinionated! When they like what you do, that is a huge compliment. It’s overwhelming sometimes.”

Shadow (Keanu Reeves) in #SonicMovie3

According to director Fowler, when the character of Shadow was teased at the end of the second movie, “fans lost their minds.”

“Shadow is a very strong hedgehog,” says Keanu Reeves, who voices the fan favorite Sonic character. “Sonic can’t compete with him at the beginning, but he’s a quick learner. Visually, it’s very exciting. There’s such a spirit of fun and surprise that’s also connected to emotional authenticity for the characters. That allows you to empathize with them.”

Gerald Robotnik (Jim Carrey), Shadow (Keanu Reeves), Ivo Robotnik (Jim Carrey) and Agent Stone (Lee Majdoub) in #SonicMovie3

In Sonic the Hedgehog 3, Jim Carrey not only reprises his scene-stealing role as the perfidious Dr. Ivo Robotnik, he also plays Ivo’s equally treacherous 110-year-old grandfather, Gerald Robotnik, the engineer of Shadow’s evil intentions. “It’s going to be amazing for audiences to see what Jim does with it,” says Fowler. “He had so many funny ideas for the characters. He’s been involved in every little aspect of the Robotnik world, including all of his interactions with his sidekick Agent Stone.”

Everyone must see this film in a movie theater, Carrey recommends. “And see it with your family. No matter how big your TV screen is, the cinema allows you to dream bigger. The artists that created this have painted it on a canvas so large you can get lost in it. But be sure to drop some popcorn so you can find your way back.”

Tom (James Marsden) and Maddie Wachowski (Tika Sumpter) in #SonicMovie3

It wouldn’t be a Sonic story without Tom and Maddie Wachowski, the squad’s surrogate parents played by James Marsden and Tika Sumpter. “James is an amazing friend and an incredible actor,” says Fowler. “He always wants to know what we can improve. And Tika is just a ray of sunshine. Her smile lights up a soundstage. She walks on set and we hear that laugh. It just makes everyone relax because we know it’s going to be a fun day.”

Also returning is Lee Majdoub as Agent Stone, Ivo Robotnik’s loyal henchman. “He auditioned for the first film with just a line or two,” says Fowler. “But he made the comedy look so easy and effortless. He has to share scenes with Jim Carrey and he’s always up for everything Jim throws at him. Jim just loves him and so do I. This movie shines a light on what an amazing actor Lee is.”

Director Rockwell of G.U.N. (Krysten Ritter) in #SonicMovie3

Krysten Ritter joins the cast as Director Rockwell of G.U.N. Rockwell views Team Sonic with a great deal of suspicion, which can be a detriment to their fight against Shadow. “She’s not exactly on Sonic’s side for a good deal of the movie, which creates some interesting layers for the story,” says Fowler. The filmmakers loved her performance in Jessica Jones and Breaking Bad and thought she’d be the perfect fit to continue to build out G.U.N., an important part of the Sonic world mythology.

2024 Puregold CinePanalo Entries Continue to Receive International Recognitions

The Philippine film industry is breathless with anticipation as the 2025 Puregold CinePanalo Film Festival draws closer, promising another showcase of homegrown talent and compelling storytelling. Adding to the excitement, entries from the festival's inaugural 2024 edition continue to garner international acclaim, earning coveted spots in prestigious global film festivals and shining a light on Filipino filmmakers' exceptional creativity and artistry. These achievements not only celebrate our deep pool of local talent but also affirm Puregold CinePanalo’s role in elevating Philippine cinema to world- class stature.

In particular, three of the 2024 Puregold CinePanalo Film Festival’s big winners were selected for presentation at different film festivals around the world. Best Picture winner “Under a Piaya Moon,” directed by Kurt Soberano, was featured at the 2024 Festival International du Film Transsaharien de Zagora in Morocco, from December 9 to 13.

Meanwhile, the Always Panalo Film and Audience Choice winning film “A Lab Story,” directed by Carlo Obispo, was shown at the 2024 Asian Film Festival Barcelona in Spain from October 24 to November 3, and at the 2024 Brunei Film Blitz from December 18 to 20.

Finally, Special Jury Prize for Short Film student short “Text FIND DAD and Send to 2366,” which was directed by Kent Cadungog, was featured at the 2024 Singapore International Film Festival from November 28 to December 8, and is set to be showcased at the Emirates Film Festival this coming January 15 to 18, 2025.

Apart from the three films, a number of other entries in the first Puregold CinePanalo were also invited for recognition at various international film festivals. Student short “Tiil ni Lola,” directed by Reutsche Colle Lima, was displayed at the 2024 Asia-Pacific Youth Micro Movie Festival in Hong Kong from November 21 to 23.

In addition, the 2024 Jagran Film Festival featured Joel Ferrer’s “Road to Happy” in the non-competitive section of the Children Showcase, while the aforementioned “A Lab Story” competed in the International Feature category.

Meantime, Eugene Torres’ “One Day League: Dead Mother, Dead All” was displayed at the 2024 Exposures Montreal Trans Film Festival, which concluded last September. Finally, joining “Text FIND DAD and Send to 2366” at the Emirates Film Festival is Jenievive Adame’s student short, “Smokey Journey.”

For Puregold Senior Marketing Manager Ms. Ivy Hayagan-Piedad, the recognition of Puregold CinePanalo’s winning entries in film festivals across the globe proves that prodigiously talented Filipino filmmakers simply needed the first Puregold CinePanalo to unleash their dream projects.

“The ability of young Filipino filmmakers to make masterpieces has never been the question. Really, it’s always been about opportunity,” said Hayagan-Piedad. “I speak for all the organizers of the Puregold CinePanalo film festival when I say that we’re proud to have given them such opportunities. It goes to show that when you give Pinoy artists a canvas, they will create art the entire world can appreciate.”

CinePanalo Festival Director Chris Cahilig concurs with Hayagan-Piedad and believes that the success of the 2024 entrants will boost excitement for the 2025 entrants.

“Hopefully the success of our 2024 CinePanalo batch encourages more people to check out what the upcoming 2025 edition has in store,” said Cahilig. “Together with Puregold, we hope to make the next CinePanalo bigger and better.”

The eight finalists of the Puregold CinePanalo 2025 will be receiving a three-million- peso (PHP 3,000,000.00) grant each, while the 25 student shorts will be receiving a production grant of one hundred and fifty thousand pesos each (PHP 150,000.000). The eight films and 25 student shorts are set to debut at the 2025 Puregold CinePanalo Film Festival, which will run from March 14 to 25, 2025 in Gateway Cinemas.
