Graciano Yumul Resigns as DOST Chief

After nearly 30 years of government service, Undersecretary Graciano Yumul Jr. has resigned as PAGASA Supervising Officer-in-Charge and DOST Research and Development Chief due to personal reasons according to a statement released by DOST Secretary Mario Montejo.

Yumul’s career path as professor, scientist, and executive was marked by excellence and dedication and duly recognized by peers from government, academe, and the private sector,” Montejo said in a statement.

Yumul leaves a rich legacy to the Department of Science and Technology for others to follow and emulate,” Montejo added.

Yumul was appointed as DOST R&D undersecretary and Philippine Atmospheric, Geophysical and Astronomical Services Administration’s OIC in 2006.

As undersecretary, he had supervised the department’s R&D institutes and grants-in-aid program, coordinated initiatives coursed through the inter-agency coordinating council, chaired the National Committee on Biosafety of the Philippines, and served as program director of the Technology Innovation for Commercialization.

He was also a professor at the University of the Philippines’ National Institute of Geological Sciences.

In 2010, Yumul replaced then Pagasa administrator Prisco Nilo, who got the ire of President Benigno "Noynoy" Aquino III over the agency's supposed dismal performance amid a typhoon Basyang.
